Meknes is one of the four imperial capitals of Morocco, and is located approximately 40 miles west-southwest of another imperial capital, Fez. In the 1670s, Sultan Moulay Ismail, made Meknes the capital of Imperial Morocco, a distinction it held until 1727. You can see some of his contributions to the city by visiting the expansive Dar al-Makhzen (the Royal Palace), or the colorful and ornate mausoleum where he is interred. The historic city center of Meknes, a living museum dedicated to the city`s golden era, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The residents of Meknes may not have forgotten its once grand imperial position but many tourists appear blissfully unaware. It is not one of the cities that you often hear mentioned when visitors start to list the places they want to see in Morocco.
