►Fleet rental car at Zagreb Airport is dreadfully slow, complicated, with plenty of surprise fees. They lost our reservations and it took us three hours to rent two cars, and 45 min to return them. They inspect for any little scratch. They charge $8.95 per day to take the car out of the country, up to ten days worth. Rental car counters don't open until 7am, so be careful if you need to return before an early flight. You can't just leave your keys without going through an inspection.
Expect severe delays crossing the border between Croatia and Slovenia. Smaller crossings are better, but some don't take non-EU passports.
To drive on Slovenian highways, you have to buy a window sticker as soon as you cross the border, at the first gas station. It is called a Vignette.
