The old capital of Languedoc, Toulouse is a city with a distinguished historical past, but also a bright future. With three major universities and a thriving high-tech sector, it's at the center of the aeronautics industry in Europe. It's known as 'La Ville Rose' (The Pink City) due to the terra-cotta bricks used in many of its buildings. The tree lined Garonne River divides the city in two with the vieux Quartier (Old Town) falling to the east and the former suburb of Saint-Cyprien rising in the west. The heart of it all is the Place du Capitole, a lovely square that's presided over by a magnificent town hall of the same name. Its 17th-century Canal du Midi links the Garonne River to the Mediterranean Sea, and can be traveled by boat, bike or on foot, which is especially romantic by night, when the Pont Neuf is floodlit.
