Situated in the very heart of the Balkan peninsula, it is one of Europe’s oldest cities), continue to Plovdiv (built on top of seven hills around the Maritsa River, in the Southern region which is an official winemaking district called 'The Thracian Valley', famous for its red wine production as well as for its massive amphitheater in the center of its Old Town, built nearly 2,000 years ago by the Romans) and finally, Varna (grew from a Thracian seaside settlement to a major seaport on the Black Sea. Be sure to visit one of the hot thermal spring "sea baths" which dot the coast.
