CASTELO BRANCO - NEIGHBORHOODS

North of Avenida Primeiro de Maio and Avenida General Humberto Delgado

35,000 people live in the regional center called Castelo Branco. Many of them live in the urban sprawl which has grown away from the original settlement, which is bounded to the south by Avenida Primeiro de Maio and Avenida General Humberto Delgado, and to the west by Rua da Granja. The area west of Rua da Granja features such local institutions as the Hospital Amato Lusitano and the Instituto Politecnico de Castelo Branco. This area is where a lot of locals live, either in single-home subdivisions and cul-de-sacs or in multi-story apartment blocks. Many of these areas have been immaculately planned by urban planners and tend to revolve around roundabouts. Commercial zoning tends to be mixed with residential; the largest retail complex in the city is the shopping mall Forum Castelo Branco, located at the junction of Estrada do Montalvao and the N3 motorway. The Zona de Lazer park and the Piscina Praia are located a short distance up the N3 from the Forum.

Most of the points of interest in Castelo Branco will be located in an area between Rua da Granja to the west and Avenida da Europa to the east. Traveling west from the Rotunda Europa, where the Avenida da Europa and Avenida General Humberto Delgado meet, you will first see the Centro de Cultura Contemporanea. Turn right and you will drive down to the Rua da Se, where the Igreja de Sao Miguel (Castelo Branco`s cathedral) is located. If you had turned left instead of going straight, you would reach the Praca de Camoes: the Museu Cargaleiro, the Solar dos Mota, and the Casa do Arco do Bispo are all within a stone`s throw of the plaza. If you travel up Rua da Se past the church, it turns into the Rua das Olarias and you will eventually reach the Largo de Sao Joao. Next to the Largo is Rua Bartolomeu da Costa: to the left, there`s the Jardim do Paco Episcopal, and on the right, the Jardim Municipal. The Museu Francisco Tavares Proenca Jr. and the Igreja da Misericordia are within walking distance on that street as well. Walking past the Museum and the Misericordia Church, turn left onto Rua Doutor Alfredo Mota, which will curve left and becomes Rua Fonte do Tostao. The Rua da Sobreira (not the Travessa, which is to the east) will meander for a short distance, around two-tenths of a mile, and will lead travelers to the Miradouro de Sao Gens, a great vantage point which overlooks the town. Castelo Branco Castle is situated directly to the Miradouro`s southwest.

South of Avenida Primeiro de Maio and Avenida General Humberto Delgado

Perhaps one of the most notable points of interest that tourists will need to know about south of the two aforementioned avenues is Castelo Branco train station, where some of you will arrive when beginning your trip in the area. Avenida Nuno Alvares is a tree-lined avenue which leads directly from the train station to the city hall building. On this avenue, you will run into a taxi dispatch office and also a Geopark Naturtejo information office, which can supply you with information and brochures about visiting monuments and villages further afield. At the corner of Avenida General Humberto Delgado and Rua do Saibreiro is the Centro de Cultura Contemporanea, which is built in a postmodern style and routinely hosts art exhibitions and orchestral recitals. South of the train station, the city continues to sprawl with mixed-use apartment complexes and light commercial retail.
