PERPIGNAN - GETTING AROUND

By Car

Driving is also a good way to get around, with lots of underground parking in the city center, but beware, during the summer and months there will be a lot of traffic, and few parking places left.

The surface carparks (parking meters, closed or underground car parks) are free from Monday to Friday between 12:00 and 2:00 pm and after 6:30 pm, on weekends from Saturday to Monday at 9:00 am, and holidays. By Walking

The main way to get around in Perpignan (due to its relatively small size) is by foot. Thanks to its compact layout and romantically curving and entwining streets, walking is the perfect mode of transport in Perpignan to take in the sights and sounds.

By Bike

Perpignan`s bike-share program BIP Vélos has around 150 bikes at 15 stations around town. Signup to its Liberté subscription on its website using a credit card (an approximate €150 deposit is held on your card); a PIN is sent to your email address to use at the stations to unlock the bikes. There are bicycle lanes in the center of the city and in the outskirts.

By Public Transportation

Perpignan has a public transportation system that deals primarily with buses and trains, it is efficient and cheap. There are bus routes that run all throughout the city, and they connect to the center of town, Perpignan Airport, and SNCF Railway Station and Gare Routiers. These are some of the bigger and more important stops in the city, the last two being the major train stations in Perpignan. The bus system is operated by Les Couriers, Tel. (0)4 68 55 68 00. The prices for the tickets are not too expensive (around €1), and it is definitely a smart way to get around the city.

A network of buses from Perpignan connects it with the various towns throughout the region. Services are generally infrequent, do not operate after about 7 pm and there are virtually no buses on Sundays and holidays, except in July and August to some of the more popular seaside resorts. Timetables can be viewed at www.sankeo.com

City Buses

The Compagnie des Transports de Perpignan-Méditerranée (CTPM) operates the city bus network, which extends out to the nearby beach resorts of Canet Plage, Ste Marie Plage etc. Buses operate between about 6:00 am and 9:00 pm Mondays to Saturdays. There are few buses on Sundays and Holidays except, in summer, to the seaside resorts. Timetables are very irregular, with seemingly random intervals between buses, but the timetables and maps are posted at every bus-stop.

Bright yellow and red, Le P`tit Bus is a free hop-on, hop-off minibus that plies a circular route around the town center.

By Taxi

Taxis can be flagged down but they have a reputation for being expensive. If you do venture away from the city center check out trains and buses as the public transport is efficient and cheap.
