CARCASSONNE - HOTEL ZONES

Medieval Center

The Medieval Center (upper town) is on a hill surrounded by a double wall and has been declared a World Heritage Site of Humanity by UNESCO. Located on the right side of the Aude River, the neighborhood includes all the features of a medieval town: turrets, narrow cobbled streets, towers and massive walls. The winding streets offer hidden treasures, restaurants and are packed with tourist shops. This is mostly all tourist oriented, although there are generations that have lived inside the walls.

Here you will find many of the top attractions such as the Chateau Comtal, the central castle of the upper town dating from the twelfth century and St-Nazaire basilica. The original style was Romanesque, but after many alterations over the years, has become predominantly Gothic including unusual gargoyles around the area.

City Center/Lower Town

The Lower Town, La Bastide Saint Louis, is where you will find more daily local life ambience. This area dates back to the Middle Ages and features the typical French bars, shops, cafes and restaurants. This neighborhood is home to a handful of charming boutiques, several great places to eat and a couple of unusually stylish overnight options. Make sure to enjoy some time in Place Carnot where the market is held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.
