How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Cannes is serviced by two airports: Nice International Airport and Cannes-Mandelieu Airport (located about 5 miles from the center of Cannes). Cannes-Mandelieu Airport is smaller and mostly frequented by private and small sized aircrafts. Nice International Airport, located 15 miles from Cannes, is the main international airport that services Cannes. If you have not booked a private transfer with us then you have a few options. It's about a 30 minute drive to Cannes from the Nice International airport, depending on traffic and your means of transportation.

Express Bus #210 picks up passengers at the airport every 30 minutes during the day and drops them at Cannes` Gare Routiere. The one-way fare costs about €20, round trip is about €30. Tickets can be bought at the office in the bus station, at Terminals 1 and 2, directly from the driver, or online. The journey takes about 30 - 50 minutes depending on traffic. The last bus leaves from Terminal 1 at 8pm and five minutes later from Terminal 2. In Cannes, the bus stops at Paul Doumer (Holiday Inn), Place Vauban, and Cannes-Hotel de Ville.

Bus #200, offered by Lignes d`Azur, is a budget alternative for the cheapest travel between Cannes and Nice International Airport, providing connections twice per hour. The bus does not stop at the airport terminals but rather at Aeroperot/Promenade in the main street outside the airport. The bus is a standard municipal bus with no special space for luggage. Traveling time will depend on traffic, but during peak traffic, it can take up to two hours to get to Cannes city center. The standard fare is about €1.50.

Trains offer another alternative to Cannes from Nice International Airport. The airport has no railway station but Nice-Saint Augustin is a short bus ride or 10-minute walk from Terminal 1. The train from Nice-Saint Augustin to Cannes on TER trains takes about 36 minutes and costs about €5.90 one way. Tickets can be purchased from the bus ticket counter at the airport, at the train station, or online.

By car, traveling time is around 30 minutes if using the toll highway. The cost is around €100 for a pre-booked car and €150 for a minivan. Taxis are also available and charge according to the meter. Uber is now an available option as well and is a much cheaper option than a taxi; the estimated cost for uberX is about €50 to Cannes.

How do I get from the train station to my hotel?

The Cannes Ville Train Station, also referred to as Gare de Cannes, is the main station in Cannes. It is centrally located at rue Jean Jaures and offers both high-speed and regional trains services. There are three types of international trains that use this station: TEE (Trans-Europe Express), Trains Bleus, and TGV (high -speed trains). It offers rapid access to the main thoroughfares of Cannes, which is why plenty of locals and visitors choose traveling by train. The station is located within walking distance from the city center.

How do I get around Cannes using Public Transportation? Is the public transportation system safe?

Public transportation is reliable, safe and inexpensive although there is little need for public transport in the city center. The main operator is Palm Bus (www.palmbus.fr). You can buy tickets onboard or from tabacs; day tickets, weekly passes and booklets of 10 tickets are available. The open-top #8 bus makes for a great scenic ride along the seafront from the port in the west to the Palm Beach peninsula in the east; tickets cost about €1.50.

The City Palm service operates in the very center of Cannes. This bus circles along La Croisette, rue d`Antibes and past the railway station before returning to the Hotel de Ville every 10 minutes. Tickets are available for purchase on the bus or at a tabac. One-day tickets with unlimited travel are available on this line only.

How do I call/hail a taxi? Is Uber available in Cannes?

Taxis can be hailed at taxi stations or ordered by telephone from Taxis Cannes (www.taxicannes.fr). Taxis are reliable and arrive within about five minutes anywhere in the city center. This option is perfect for getting around at night or for tourists looking for a rapid means of transport to your final destination. Tipping is not expected but is appreciated.

Uber is available in Cannes (and a welcome alternative to taxis) offering a reliable ride at less expensive rates.

Is Cannes a walking city?

Cannes is easy to walk around and arguably the best way to explore because the city is rather small. In addition, the chance of identifying and enjoying some of the less renowned sights of Cannes is better if you choose to go on foot.

I will have a car in Cannes, where can I park?

It is not recommended to drive in the city due to the fact that Cannes is compact and getting around by foot is less challenging. If you do decide to rent a car we suggest you pick it up as you depart the city to avoid excessive rental/parking expenses. Parking lots are quite accessible around the city center. The average hourly parking price is about €3.50, the average daily parking is about €20. There are also plenty of overnight parking options in Cannes, which will cost about €20.00. Some of the most popular overnight parking spots include Suquet Forville, Vauban, JW Marriot Cannes.

How do I get around by bike?

Cannes is great to explore by bike offering a great way to see the city in a short period of time. You can hire scooters and bicycles at different locations in the city; half day and full day rental options are available. The city offers excellent cycle routes so you won`t have to fight with too much traffic to enjoy the lovely surroundings. In addition, there are plenty of bike routes that are accessible directly from Cannes that run the length of the coastline; you can travel for miles in either direction enjoying the stunning views. However, unless you stick to the coastline, roads around the area are very rarely level.

Is Cannes a dangerous city?

Cannes is generally a very safe place. However, as in any big city, tourist may be a target for pickpockets and crooks on the city`s streets (petty theft activity peaks during the Film Festival).

Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency of France is the Euro, US dollars are not accepted. Cannes has plenty of ATMs in and around the city to withdraw cash, and most of the top restaurants, shopping centers, boutiques, hotels, etc. accept credit cards. Also, banks offer the most convenient exchange rates and can be spotted throughout the city. As a rule, banks open weekdays between 8:30am and 5pm, with an approximately 2-hour lunch break in the middle of the day.

What is the weather like?

Cannes offers a pleasant Mediterranean climate, which makes this popular tourist destination almost a year round retreat. With the cooling sea breeze, temperatures in summer are much easier to tolerate than some of Cannes Mediterranean counterparts. May through September, temperatures average above 70F. The peak summer months (July and August) average 80F providing excellent sunbathing weather. Spring usually averages in the 60’s and autumn temperatures range from 60’s - 70’s and are known to be windy with a considerable amount of rain falls, especially in October and November. In winter, temperatures will drop below 40F, which means fewer crowds, but also no sunbathing on the beach.

I don`t speak French. Will many people speak English?

French is the official language spoken in Cannes. However, the staff of most tourism-related venues (hotels, restaurants) speaks English fluently, and plenty of attractions (museums, guided tours) feature a wide openness to the English speaking public. We suggest you get a good English-French guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

What is the food like?

From the fresh seafood markets to the abundance of locally grown fruit and vegetables, the area is widely renowned for offering healthy, flavorful and colorful cuisine, as well as traditional dishes. The city offers more than 300 restaurants ranging from Michelin-star eateries to intimate, family run cafes. Alfresco dining and coffee drinking in charming cafes is popular from spring to autumn.

Some traditional local dishes you`ll want to be sure to try would be Beignets de Fleurs de Courgettes (Courgette flowers), a definite favorite in Cannes when they come into season. Bouillabaisse, a traditional Provencal fish stew, which originated with Marseille fishermen, has become one of the best loved and most popular dishes along the French Riviera. Pissaladiere, a caramelized onion and anchovy flatbread, is another favorite sold in pretty much every bakery and market in Cannes. And finally, traditional Ratatouille, vegetable stew from the Occitan region, is another Provencal staple as well as Socca, a chickpea flour pancake that is a delicious treat of a snack!

What are the best areas for shopping?

Cannes offers a wide array of international designer shops that line La Croisette, including Chanel, Dior and Gucci. At the other end of the scale is rue Meynadier, an active street with a market atmosphere, and a big contrast to the designer shop offerings on La Croisette. This affordable bustling shopping district is lined with clothes shops and artisan food stores. In addition, rue d`Antibes, which runs parallel to La Croisette, covers all shopping needs from clothes and jewelry to perfumes.

Markets: Marche Forville is a large covered market situated between the town hall and the railway tracks. This market offers locally grown flowers, freshly caught fish and regional fruit and vegetables. The Forville Market is open Tues - Sunday from 7am - 1pm.

Galerie Gray d`Albion is Cannes` largest shopping mall filled with chic boutiques and designer stores, address: 17 Gray Street, near La Croisette. More affordable shopping can be found at Cannes La Bocca where there are numerous superstores and shopping malls selling clothing, furniture and electronic goods from the big names.

Note: Value-added tax (VAT) rate is currently 20% in France for standard goods. A reduced rate of 10% applies to restaurants, transport, and certain medical drugs. And a 5.5% tax applies to food, water and non alcoholic beverages, books, some entertainment events and some domestic personal services. Look for stores displaying Global Blue Tax-Free Shopping signage in the window. When paying for your purchases ask the shop staff for a Tax-Free Form.

What are the best areas for nightlife?

Cannes has a lively nightlife with many pubs, bars and clubs, ranging from swanky celebrity hangouts to down to earth pubs. A strip of bars stretching along rue Felix Faure, are perfect for sun down, most are chic, and several have DJs after dinner. The cobbled streets of Le Suquet are perfect for a romantic drink. If you`re looking for something a bit livelier, head to rue des Freres Pradignac and the surrounding streets.

Cannes also offers world-class casinos. The Casino Croisette, located in Palais des Festivals, is the most reputable of Cannes casino`s, a fixture in the city since the 1950`s. The Casino des Prices and Palm Beach Casino are also some of the first hand casinos popular to Cannes. Palm Beach Casino is the newer casino and attracts a younger crowd with a summer-only beachside poker room, a beach club with pool, a restaurant, and a disco that runs until dawn.

Cannes Film Festival – May

Since 1939 Cannes has been the host of the most prestigious film festival in the world. It is also the main annual rendezvous for all members of the movie industry.

International Fireworks Festival -- July to August

The Fireworks Festival takes place at intervals through July and August over the bay of Cannes.

Cannes International Boat Show – September

Each September over 50,000 visitors descend on the Port of Cannes to see the latest models and innovations at the Cannes International Boat Show. There is a whole range of boats on display ranging from smaller boats for the leisure market to glittering luxury cruisers.

Christmas Market – December

At the annual Christmas market visitors can find a variety of local crafts and produce, and there are plenty of performances and illuminations throughout the city.

What do I need to know before going to the beach in Cannes?

The beaches in Cannes are part of the main attraction and the genuine backbone of the city. The coastline runs 9.5 miles from the foothills of the Esterel mountains to the eastern city limits and includes the Iles de Lerins. The beaches consist of 13 public beaches, 2 municipal beaches and 33 private beaches offering plenty of options to choose from.

Private Beaches: Most of the private beaches belong to the luxury hotels in Cannes.Yet, you do not need to be a guest of the hotel to be granted access to some of these beaches. The private beaches provide certain services and amenities such as lounge chairs, sun umbrellas, changing/washing facilities, and areas dedicated to beach activities.

Public Beaches: Between the suburb of La Bocca to the west and Moure Rouge in the east, Cannes offers vast stretches of public beaches. In addition to the free beaches, the 2 municipal beaches, Zamenhoff and Mace offer lounge chair and umbrella rentals, as well as lockers for a fraction of the cost of private beaches. The free beaches are well-maintained and very clean. There are snack kiosks conveniently placed beachside.
