STOCKHOLM - GETTING AROUND

Public Transportation

The best way to get around Stockholm is by the excellent public transportation system. Stockholm public transport, SL, covers buses, metro, commuter trains, trams, and certain ferry lines in GreaterStockholm. The routes are divided into zones and one ticket is validfor all types of public transportation in the same zone within specified time (usually 1 hour).

Bus

The bus system has numerous lines that make stops all over the city, if a subway connection does not conveniently cover a particular area of Stockholm, a bus will. The subway and bus systems have been coordinatedto complement each other. Many visitors use a bus to reach Djurgarden, although it is walkable, because the T-bana does not go here. Fares are the same as the metro as zone tickets and travel cards are valid on buses as well. There are also night buses running early into the morning, which offer visitors a late night alternative to expensive taxis. It is important to note that tickets cannot be purchases on buses and fines are steep for traveling without a valid ticket. A standard zone 1 ticket cost about 36SEK (around $4.00).

Metro/UndergroundTrains (T-Bana)

With over 100 stations that can take visitors to various points of interest downtown and the outskirts, the underground (T-Bana) is an extremely user-friendly system to get around. The city is divided into three zones, and zone tickets are good for several trips within 75 to120 minutes. There are two types of tickets suited for visitors: zone tickets and travel cards. Zone tickets for zone 1 cost about 36SEK (approx. $4) and enable visitors to travel as much as they want around the zone until the ticket expires (which is marked on your ticket). The travel card cost about 115SEK ($13) for 24-hours, and about 230SEK($27) for 72-hours. Discounts are available if you purchase thetravel card in advance. Both zone tickets and travel cards are valid onall SL transportation.

The Stockholm underground is also known as the worlds longest art gallery as so many of its stations are adorned with the works of different artist. You can find all kinds of paintings, sculptures and mosaics that turn an ordinary commute into a memorable art journey. The public transportation agency (SL) offers free guided art tours lead by certified guides during summer time.

Ferry

Ferries are used by both commuters and tourists providing a scenic alternative to the bus. Ferries service the archipelago`s main locations, including the Djurgarden and Hammarby Sjostad islands. The boats run year-round and admission to ferries between Slussen and Djurgarden are included if you purchase a travel card.

Walking

Stockholm is easily explored on foot. Neighborhoods like Gamla Stan (Old Town), Djurgarden, Sodermalm, and Normalarstrand are perfectly walkable, and a great way to check out Stockholm`s history and top attractions while taking in the city`s charm.

Bicycle

Stockholm has many bike paths and lanes making it easy to get around town and between islands. You will find rental companies scattered throughout, with bike rentals costing around 250SEK (about $30) per day, depending on the bike. Stockholm`s CityBikes is a networkof bikes that cyclist can use for up to three at a time and be returned to theCityBike stand. Bike rentals can be purchased online, at SL stations, the tourist office, and most hotels. One of the best places to go cycling is on Djurgarden, which is also where you will find some of the city`s most popular activities and outstanding natural beauty.

Taxi

Taxis are available throughout the city but taxis in Stockholm are expensive with a 6-mile journey costing about $38. Taxi prices in Sweden are not regulated and will greatly vary, make sure to check the price on the yellow-and-white label on the window before entering the vehicle. Taxis that display an illuminated dome light can be hailed directly on the street, or you can order by phone. There are many taxi companies to choose from in Stockholm; caution is advised and make sure to use approved taxis that are metered and have a yellow number plate. Note: Uber also operates in Stockholm.

Car

It is recommended not to drive in the city because of the widespread availability of traffic-free walkways, parks, many skinny one-way streets, and the efficient public transportation system. But if you must, parking is available at Park-and-Ride facilities, in parking garages, or on designated street parking. If your car is registered in Sweden you are obliged to pay a congestion charge in the Stockholm inner city.
