KOS - GETTING AROUND

The island of Kos has an adequate road network. The local bus has a full schedule with regular routes from any region of the island to the town of Kos. Due to the terrain but also because of the existence of the many bicycle paths in the city, an extremely popular mean of transportation in the city of Kos is the bike. On the island there are many companies that rent bicycles.

By Car

The accident rate for all motor vehicles especially on the dangerous central trunk road is off the charts, especially in August when particularly reckless Athenians show up, so drive defensively and NEVER drunk, police traps screen for this and fines are astronomical.

By Bus

Buses run often from Kos Town towards all other main island villages.

The municipality of Kos runs their own bus service, DEAS, serving all points between Psalídi and Lámbi through the beach suburbs and up to Asclepeion. The ticket and information office can be found at Akti Koundouriotou 7.

Two bus stations are present in Kos Town: one, by the port, is for the urban and sub-urban buses (e.g. #1 to Ag.Fokas, #5 to Thermae); the second, inside town (Pisandrou by Venizelou), is where the island buses stop, including the one for the airport, that passes through Mastichari.

Schedules change every 30 days, so be careful if you travel across different months. All tickets are to be paid on board except for the local buses leaving from the terminal at Akti Miaouli St. (by the port) where it`s cheaper to buy in the ticket booth.

By Taxi

Taxis are common but expensive. From the airport they will charge at least €15, even if you just go to Mastichari, which is only 5 minutes away. An airport-Kos Town ride may cost you around €35. Taxis are all metered and available at nearby offices and on the road. You can also call out a taxi through phone, but they might charge you with additional fee. One of the taxi companies on the island is Kos Taxi.

By Bicycle

Kos is a relatively flat island, therefore it is suitable to be discovered by bike. Rental offices will offer you bikes for as low as 5€ per day. Along with Tríkala and Édessa, Kos is among the few cities in Greece that actively makes provision for cyclists, with a joined-up bike-path system extending from the far reaches of Psalídi to Tingáki, and for a few euros a day the flattest bits of the island are yours to pedal around. You can also bike to Thermes beach passing by Psalidi beach and Agias Fokas beach, the end of the route is especially scenic.

By Rental Scooter

Scooters and ATVs can be hired from many places. You will find a lot along Vassileos Georgiou Boulevard and on Hamirlou Street close to marina. For a 50cc scooter, the daily fee is 15€; some discount if foreseen for longer rentals (3 or 7 days). Most of the places will ask 45/40 for 3 days rentals. It`s possible to rent a scooter for 35EUR for 3 days in a place at the corner of Okikonomou and Makrigianni streets (SE part of town). In most of the places for 15EUR you can rent cheap Chinese scooters (like Kymco) these machines are good enough so going for more expensive options has little sense. There are quite a lot of accidents involving tourists so always remember to ask for a helmet and use it. Fuel is not included (around 1,80-1,90 €/lt, i.e. around 10€ for a round trip of the island, around 55 miles). If Renting ATV, remember that it`s highly fuel consuming and is quite an expensive option.
