RETHYMNON - BEACHES

Magnificent beaches are found along the coasts of Rethymnon, both on the northern and the southern side of the prefecture. Rethymnon beaches on the northern side are more organized and popular, lined up with hotels, restaurants, cafeterias and water sports centers. Most Rethymnon beaches on the southern side remain untouched by tourism and ideal for total privacy. A drive around will bring you to fabulous places to relax.

Agia Galini

The main beach of Agia Galini is located about 35 miles south of Rethymnon town, it is well-organized with sun beds and umbrellas and has nice crystalline waters. The beach offers all kind of beach facilities and a wide range of water sports. On the east end of the beach, visitors will be able to find quieter spots for swimming and a small river ending into the sea. There one can enjoy a fresh bath under the shadow of the impressive cliffs. Other wonderful clean beaches with pristine waters can be found after the long sandy beach of Agia Galini, in various picturesque inlets. In the village, visitors will find everything needed in terms of accommodations and entertainment.

Bali

Bali is a picturesque coastal village nestled in the mountains around the natural bay and 20 miles east of Rethymnon Town. Small inlets are scattered on the coast in front of the village where visitors can swim in the crystalline waters and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the nice facilities. In the village and the surrounding area plenty of taverns, cafes and accommodations are available.

Panormos

Panormos is a beautiful fishing village lying 14 miles east of Rethymnon town, on the northern coast of Crete. The sandy beach is fully organized with crystal clear waters and serene atmosphere. Plenty of taverns and accommodations with an amazing view over the sea are available in the wider region.

Perivolia

Perivolia is a coastal village located 1 mile east of Rethymnon town. Perivolia is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. This long sandy beach is actually a natural continuation of Rethymnon beach. It is open on the north side and is exposed to the strong winds known as meltemia. The beach is quite well organized with plenty of hotels and other types of accommodation in front of the beach itself. Plenty of entertainment, food and drinking options are available at the beach. Nightlife bars also abound in this area and you will find facilities for swimming, sea sports and sun-bathing (umbrellas and sun beds). You could access the beach from Rethymnon by taxi, public bus, rental cars or motorbikes. A better alternative could be walking it up from the city center to the beach.

Platanias

Platanias beach lies about 2 miles east of Rethymnon Town. It is a beautiful sandy beach, open to the north. The beach is affected by summer winds, the so called meltemia. The beach is accessible by the local buses from Rethymnon Town. Platanias beach is well organized and offers many accommodation options. The beach has several Greek taverns offering local food and drinks.

Adele

The north coast of Rethymnon is a long strip of sand stretching for about 12 miles. Adelianos Kampos is a nice beach that covers a big part of the coast, about 3 miles. It is known as Adele beach and it is a popular destination among family travelers. The clean sand and pebbled beach is ideal for a stroll along the bay, where you can easily find a private secluded area or else sit at the chairs and parasols erected in front the taverns and bars lined on the main strip. The area near Adelianos Kampos is one of the most developed tourist friendly areas in Rethymnon. While the locals make you feel at home, you can stroll around the village which is very close to the beach. Popular tourist shops line the beach with clothes, artworks, souvenirs etc. It can be reached by public bus from Rethymnon as well as Heraklion half a mile from Adele beach, Platenes village offers a more lively experience with water sports, disco bars, golf parks and excellent taverns.

Plakiás

The village of Plakias is situated 25 miles south of Rethymnon. This resort boasts a superb sandy beach and a well-organized tourist infrastructure including water sport facilities.

Preveli Beach

The beach of Preveli or Palm Beach (Fínikas) is situated at the southern coast of Crete, 25 miles from Rethymnon. The palm-tree background and the small lagoon turn this smooth sandy beach into a truly unique exotic place!
