COSTA DE LA LUZ - NATURAL PARKS


The area is noted for its protected nature reserves and parks, incorporating such areas of outstanding beauty as the Doñana National Park. As it is situated so close to the Strait of Gibraltar, the province is therefore an ideal place for bird watching. There is a spectacular view of these avian creatures especially during periods of bird migration in the route of Europe to Africa. There are also two natural areas here: Isla del Trocadero and the Marismas de Sancti Petri. These two are supported by Cadiz Bay s wealth of wildlife. The vast coasts are particularly wealthy of wildlife especially Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park.

Doñana Natural Park

If you are a nature lover then this is the place to go. The park is immense and considered by many the finest example of a wetland reserve in Europe, it is bird watching paradise. The area is made up of three different types of ecosystem, pine forests, salt marshes and beaches, all of them offer a unique habitat for wildlife that changes with the seasons. If you are lucky you will see the endangered Lynx or Egyptian Mongoose. A good starting point is to call at one of the many visitors` centers located around the park where you will find general information about the park and its routes.

Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park

One of Andalucía`s most visited parks, renowned for its wildlife, rugged limestone landscape and great hiking territory. Declared a reserve by UNESCO, its rugged limestone terrain of cliffs, gullies, caves and gorges are stunning. The most impressive being La Garganta Verde (the Green Gorge) with its 400m rocky walls that are home to the griffon vulture and some of parks more extraordinary plants. The Hundidero-Gato, (cave) is the largest in Andalucia with its cavern measuring 4km long and an entrance of 60m high. Also not to be missed is the Spanish Fir tree forest in the Sierra del Pinar area.

Parque Natural de los Alcornocales

Past Tarifa, is the magical Parque Natural de los Alcornocales, a vast protected cork forest, a mountainous, colorful landscape with hidden tracks and trails to discover. The park is home to the largest cork tree grove on the Iberian Peninsula and has a mixture of gently rolling and rugged landscapes that are full of ravines and gullies. Its best feature can be found in the southern part of the park, the Canutos or mist forest is a run of narrow river valleys surrounded by subtropical forest that can only be found in Spain and Turkey. Many different species of animals survive in the parks ecosystems because of its geographical location near to the Strait of Gibraltar.

Drive the Facinas Road, one of the most romantic routes in Europe. The track starts from the Roman ruins at Bolonia and winds up through the park, exiting at Los Barrios, some of the route is in poor condition, but drivable. Laid out before you along the route is an abundance of beautiful flora and fauna, fields of flowers and emerald forest beds. During the summer the area gets very dried out, but the views, coupled with the peace and quiet, make the visit worthwhile any time of the year.

Del Estrecho Natural Park

The park stretches from the coast of Algeciras to Tarifa and takes in the Strait of Gibraltar, making it ideal for whale and dolphin watching. It`s also the main migrating route for many birds between Africa and Europe. The best time to see the migration is between March and May plus August and October. Along this coastline you will find some of the best conditions in the world for kitesurfing and windsurfing due to the strong easterly wind (levante).

The Salt Marshes in Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park

This area is mainly salt marshes and sandy beaches, within these there are many freshwater lagoons plus tidal inlets that provide a home to a mixture of wildlife. The salt from the marshes has provided a way of preserving food since the Phoenicians and Romans settled here. In 1989 it was declared a natural park to stop any more building on the marshes and safeguard the areas habitat.

La Brena and Las Marismas de Barbate Natural Park

This is a coastal park of rocky cliffs that spreads inland to umbrella pine forests and the El Tajo, Meca and Trafalgar Towers stand watch over its coastline. On the 21st of October 1805 the naval battle between the English and combined Spanish-French fleets took place off the Cape of Trafalgar, under the command of Admiral Nelson the English defeated the Spanish and French forces. There is a lighthouse at the Cape of Trafalgar that stands at 34m high and was built on the original site of a Roman lighthouse.

Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park

The park is situated in the north of Huelva and borders Portugal to the west which made it a popular smugglers route after the Spanish civil war, you can follow the footsteps of the smugglers by taking the route of the packmen (La Ruta de los Mochileros). The landscape is gently rolling hills, wooded valleys and craggy peaks. On your travels through the park you will see Roman tracks, caves, old watermills and Moorish hill forts, also many beautiful villages lie within the park where you can take a break for a cold drink. The area is famous for ham (jamon iberico) and you will see herds of Iberian pigs foraging amongst the trees for nuts, for the best ham try the village of Jabugo.
