EASTERN COSTA DEL SOL

Rincón de la Victoria

Rincón de la Victoria is the starting point for the so-called 'sun and avocado route'. This seaside village, surrounded by tropical vegetation and vast tracts of sugar cane plantations, is is a particularly popular place for Malagueños who come here during the summer months to enjoy the almost 2 miles of sandy beach and chiringuitos (beachside restaurants) specializing in seafood and paella.
According to historians, Man first settled here in the Palaeolithic period, between 35,000 and 10,000 years ago. This is evidenced by the prehistoric remains that the ancient Axarquians left in the Cueva del Higuerón from where there is a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. This cave is also known as the Treasure Cave because, according to legend, five Hammudies' were persecuted by the Christians and hid their possessions there.

Nerja

Nerja is the most attractive town along this stretch of coastline, sheltering at the foot of the Sierra de Almijara. Don't miss its magnificent tree-lined promenade, the Balcón de Europa, jutting out into the sea and giving stunning views along the rocky shore. Nerja is also famous for its cave, the Cueva de Nerja, 2 and a half miles from town. Once a sleepy fishing village, the town now has a population of over 22,000. The old quarter of the town is still virtually unchanged with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums, on which a canary can sometimes be heard singing. Nerja boasts 10 miles of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, the 'Balcony of Europe', a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its fascinating caves, located just 2 miles from the center of town. They include archaeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall where many performances are staged during the summer.
