KLAIPEDA - GETTING AROUND
The city has excellent public transport links; you can travel through its territory by buses and trolley buses. The most profitable option is to purchase tickets for travel at newsstands, which are next to each public transport stop. If necessary, tickets can be bought from the driver, but they will cost about 30% more expensive than in the stands.
By Bus: Tickets on city-owned buses currently cost about €0.80 from kiosks or €1.00 if bought directly from the driver. All city-owned buses require everybody to board through the front door only. A solitary machine for validating tickets can be found next to, or somewhere very near to, the driver. Probably the most useful bus for visitors is the N°8 which runs from the bus and train stations down through the middle of the city and south to the suburbs via the massive Akropolis shopping center.
A new fleet of grey, green and orange city-owned buses has recently been introduced, which unlike any other public transport in the country has manually operated doors for getting off. Push the small buttons on the handrails to open the doors.
By Minibuses: Klaipeda's superb, privately-run minibus (maršrutinis taksi) fleet runs around the clock. Flag one down anywhere in the street and tell the driver when you want him to stop. Tickets cost around €0.95 between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm, and about €1.50 at all other times. There are only now four private routes left. The rest of the city's minibusses are run by the city, follow a formal schedule and only stop at official bus stops.
