HUELVA FAQ'S
People wishing to visit Huelva will be flying into Seville Airport (IATA code SVQ),
approximately 65 miles away from the city. If you are renting an
automobile for a self-drive vacation, you will pick up and drop off
your car at Seville Airport unless informed otherwise during the
booking process.
Driving directions from Seville Airport: When leaving the
airport, go west on the A-4 motorway. Turn right at exit 537, which
will take you on the ring road around Seville. Take exit 19 and head
south on the A-49 motorway. You will be on this road for the majority
of your drive, taking the west exit at Exit 77 (H-31 to Huelva).
Afterward you will join the H-31 road which will take you to the center
of Huelva.
You can take a taxi from the airport as well, but
expect to pay at the very least €130 to get to Huelva, if not €150 or
more. Travel time is a little over an hour.
There is a bus service in Huelva, operated by the Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano del Area de Huelva (CTHU, siu.cthu.es). It is used almost exclusively by locals, with the few bus lines that tourists will be most interested in being Lines M-302 (to Punta Umbria) as well as M-402 and 403 (to Palos de la Frontera). A one-way ticket costs between €1.50 and €3, although you can get a discounted fare if you use a reloadable plastic card, available for purchase from vending machines and newsagents for €1.50. Buses run from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, but in off-peak hours on some lines, buses only run hourly or every other hour. Consult siu.cthu.es for exact timetables.

In Punta Umbria you can find taxis at the cross-section of Avenida Sundheim and Avenida del Decano. Taxis in Huelva and environs are white with one or two blue stripes, which can be either on the driver-side door or on the hood. Flagfall for taxis in Huelva is €2.10 as of 2022, and you will most likely pay no more than €20 for taxis to Punta Umbria, and less to Palos. How easy is it to explore Huelva?Huelva is a fairly compact city, about a half-mile by a half-mile in size. Palos de la Frontera and Punta Umbria are also fairly walkable, although it isn't feasible to walk to these towns directly from Huelva. Outside the traditional core of Huelva, streets are planned out in a modern style (not quite a grid but fairly close to one), while in the center of town streets wind around corners and buildings more.
How safe is Huelva?Huelva is a fairly safe city, although you should be aware that pickpockets do operate here particularly in the summertime. Between Huelva and Punta Umbria, an ounce of prevention will go a long way when it comes to having an enjoyable vacation. Don't "look lost", walk with purpose, don't flash around expensive cameras or other electronics, and don't place your wallet in your back pocket.
What is shopping like in Huelva? What kinds of souvenirs are unique to the area? Where should I shop?Huelva is not really known for shopping like other towns and cities in Andalucia are. It doesn't mean that you can't find locally-made gifts or Iberico ham, however. Holea Shopping Center just outside town is where you should go to find all types of stores, from international chains to local shops. Normally we wouldn't recommend a Western-style shopping center for souvenir shopping, but it does come highly-recommended. For luxury items from Iberico ham to designer clothing, stop by the multi-story El Corte Inglés department store, near the Museo de Huelva on the Avenida Alcalde Federico Molina Orta.
Can I pay/tip in U.S. dollars? The currency of Spain is the Euro (€) and U.S. dollars are not accepted for payment. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Currency exchange desks and ATMs can be found at your arrival airport and at many locations throughout the region.
I do not speak Spanish. Do many people speak English?Spanish is of course the official language in Huelva. English is understood in tourist areas, but it won`t be spoken everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-Spanish dictionary and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10. To ask someone if they speak English, say `¿Habla inglés?`.
What are the drinking laws in Spain? What other facts should I know about drinking here? The minimum purchasing and drinking age for alcohol in Spain is 18. Your passport can serve as verification of your age in bars and nightclubs. Last call in Huelva and Punta Umbria is 2 or 3 a.m. on weekdays and as late as 6 a.m. on weekends.
