How do I get to Cluj-Napoca?

The Cluj-Napoca International Airport is located 5.6 miles east of the city center, it is the second busiest airport in Romania.

If you have not booked a private transfer through us then you have a few options including car rentals, taxis, trolleybuses, and buses.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

There are many internationally known car rental companies at the airport including Avis, Budget, and Europcar, and several local providers.

Bus lines #5 and #8 travel between the airport and downtown Cluj-Napoca from 5:30 am until midnight costing around 2.5 lei per person. The bust stop is located on the main street after you exit the airport, take a right, and walk down the street. The ticket machine is found at the bus stop.

Trolleybuses travel from the airport to the city center, the trolleybus stop is located by the bus stops and tickets cost around 2 lei. There is a ticket booth at the trolleybus stop and a ticket machine.

Taxis from the airport to the city center cost between 15-25 RON, around 2.25 RON per 0.62 miles. Taxis should be meter and show a valid badge in Romania.

Uber and Bolt are available ridesharing apps in the city. Download them from your smartphone, payment, pick up and drop off are all entered through the app. Uber costs between 3-5 RON more than a taxi but generally offers better comfort and availability of cars.

How do I get around by train in Cluj-Napoca?

Cluj-Napoca Rail Station is located 1.2 miles north of the city center, situated on the CFR-Romanian Railways mainline 300 from Bucharest-Oradea-Romanian Western Border and line 401 from Cluj-Napoca-Dej. The rail station is very well connected to all parts of the city by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and taxis. Trolleybuses #4 and #9 travel from the train station into the city center. The cost for a taxi ride between central Cluj and the train station or airport should cost around 12-25 lei.

How do I get from the bus station to my hotel?

The Fany Bus Terminal in Cluj-Napoca is the main bus terminal in the city located 1.6 miles from the city center, about an 8-minute drive. There are a taxi stand, a public bus stop, and a tram station located close to the station.

How do I get around the city using public transportation?

The city of Cluj-Napoca is very good and offers 21 bus lines, 6 trolleybus lines, and 3 tram lines covering 199 miles. The regional transportation in the city offers many different lines servicing the city center and surrounding suburbs. Most bus, trolleybus, and tram lines operate every 15 minutes, and should cost around 2.5-5 RON for a single ticket, around 15 RON for a day pass, and can be purchased from special booths marked with the RATUC logo. On board the buses, are ticket machines that accept contactless payments.

Should I rent a car in Cluj-Napoca?

Renting a car when visiting Cluj-Napoca is not necessary if only staying in the city itself, there are plenty of transportation options available and parking and traffic can be quite hectic. There are one-way streets in the city center which makes driving around quite confusing. The city is well connected by roads that take passengers into neighboring cities and countries. European road E60 links Bucharest and Brasov to the south, Oradea, and Budapest to the west, through Bors customs.

How do I call/hail a taxi?

Taxis are plentiful in the city of Cluj-Napoca but can be expensive compared to other parts of the country. Pricing is around RON2.33 per 0.62 miles with the same amount applied as a start fee. Typically a trip between the city center and the suburbs shouldn’t cost you more than RON10-15.

Taxis can be identified by the company logo on the sign on top of the car, respectable companies include Atlas, Diesel Rapid, Diesel Taxi, Pritax, Nova, Terra and fan, and Pro Rapid. They can be found outside many important locations throughout the city including taxi stands, hotels, tourist attractions, shopping malls, and called by phone.

Watch out for what they call underground “shark” drivers who try to exploit strangers by overcharging, they charge at least several times the normal fees and hang out around the train station and airport. They can be identified by just a TAXI sign on their car and nothing else. Always look for the name of the company on the door.

Is Cluj-Napoca a walking city?

Cluj-Napoca is a bustling city with plenty of nature spread throughout including Central Park a large verdant space set on the riverbanks great for walking and cycling. Wander through the beautiful Botanical Gardens, a great place to submit yourself to nature and relax amongst vibrant flowers. Most of the sights and attractions of the city are within walking distance and there are daily guided walking tours available to take you to the main sights and learn about the city.

Visitors can take a 15-minute hike up Cetatuia Hill, located across the river from the Old Town. The scenic observation point in the city offers a park-like environment with cafes and outdoor seating. Turda Gorge is located 9 miles outside of the city, a rare natural beauty offering excellent hiking opportunities. Enjoy some incredible sweeping views of the verdant surroundings after a hike to the top (takes about an hour). 

Can I ride a bike in Cluj-Napoca?

Getting around Cluj by bike is a great idea. There are many rental opportunities found in the city through the bike-sharing system from places such as DownTown Rent a Bike, I’Velo, and StudenObike. There are 50 self-service bike renting stations with 500 bicycles in the city. There are only a few official bike lanes in the city, many of them will need to share the roads with cars, so be careful. The city and surrounding valley offer some great biking opportunities, many through hills and wide-open spaces. Renting a bicycle will cost around 35 RON a day, the city is relatively small and compact and cycling is a great way to explore.

Is Cluj-Napoca a dangerous city, is there anything I should be aware of?

Cluj-Napoca is a very safe destination for tourists with crimes against visitors being very rare. There are few other cities anywhere in the world that feel safer, there is plenty of police presence around town, especially in frequently visited tourist sights and attractions. Be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas and onboard public transport, don’t exchange money in the Change Bureaus, always use Banks. Keep your valuables close, be aware of your surroundings, and don’t wander around alone at night. If you rent a car be sure to take extra precautions and lock your vehicle and remove any valuables.

What are some popular areas for shopping?

Cluj-Napoca is a great city for shopping enthusiasts featuring two large malls; Iulius Mall and Polus Center along with various smaller shops, vintage outlet stores, and markets to explore. When shopping in Cluj some of the best local authentic items to buy are jams, nuts, honey, and dried fruits, cheese, and wine and jewelry, embroidery, woven rugs, ceramics, woodwork, and leather goods.

Check out independent designer stores Helofita with several locations in the city selling a great selection of secondhand clothes in good condition. Tabita is a chain of outlet stores selling cool local items. What is the language spoken in Cluj-Napoca?

The official language spoken in Cluj-Napoca is Romanian, the closest currently spoken relative to ancient Latin. Many people will also be able to speak French, Spanish, and Italian, and the Roma people will speak the native Romany. A majority of the people in the service industry such as hotels and restaurants will speak English, and many locals speak Italian. What is the best time to visit Cluj-Napoca?

The city of Cluj-Napoca offers a continental climate influenced by its proximity to the Apuseni Mountains with hot, humid summers, and cold winters. The summer temperatures can range from 64-104 degrees Fahrenheit, with daily averages during August around 86 degrees. The summer months can bring random heavy storms. The spring and autumn months are a great time to visit with fewer crowds and less heat in the city. These months are great for capturing the blooming flowers in the countryside, hiking in the hills, and seeing the changing colors in the fall. Winter temperatures are often in the 30s F and the city receives on average 65 days of snow during the winter, the city can be quite charming in the winter. The most popular and busiest time to visit is the summer from June to August.

What is the currency? Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency of Romania is the Romania Leu (RON or lei). You will need to exchange your currency for the Romanian Leu, which can be done upon arrival at the airport currency exchange desks or banks and specialized stores called Foreign Exchange Bureaus.

What is the food like?

The dining scene in Cluj-Napoca is varied and diverse with a plethora of restaurants specializing in Transylvanian, Romania, Hungarian, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Middle Eastern, American, and International cuisine leaving diners spoilt for choice. Dining in the city is some of the best in the country, the Cluj people are very proud of their city, culture, and cuisine with traditional dishes including varza a la Cluj, a savory plate with pork, sour cabbage, and rice flavored with paprika, thyme, and cumin normally served with bread and sour cream.
