The sleepy fishing village of Quarteira was developed in the 1960s to become one of the first luxury resort towns in the Algarve. In the same decade, a Portuguese hotel and resort company planned a similarly luxurious resort complex, Vilamoura, immediately adjacent. Today, the two resort hubs (pop. 20,000) welcome all types of tourists, from families to golf aficionados to the glamorous jet-set. Much of the activity in Vilamoura revolves around the state-of-the-art Vilamoura Marina, which can hold nearly 1,000 yachts. Inaugurated in 1974, it continues to hold the distinction of being Portugal`s largest marina over 40 years on. Close by is a Vegas-style casino, featuring fine dining, stage shows and more.
