Targu Neamt is located on the Neamt River in the historic region of Moldavia in northeastern Romania. It is a great jumping-off point to explore the monasteries and churches in the area, of which the most famous are Neamt Monastery, Agapia Monastery, and Varatec Monastery. Neamt Fortress, built on the orders of Prince Petru I, dates from the fourteenth century and was a key defensive garrison for the Moldavian Principality.
