Driving toward Setubal, the provincial capital, the first town in the region you will pass is Palmela. Semi-rural and built on the foothills of the Arrabida Mountains, Palmela is one of the more beautiful and luxurious hillside villages in Portugal. Setubal is located on Setubal Bay and the estuary of the Sado River, and throughout modern history it has been an important regional fishing and trading center.
