Major Cities

On the Romantic Road going through the south of Germany, Rothenburg ob der tauber is the best-preserved medieval city in Europe. The stately towers, massive fortifications and patrician houses makes this widely considered one of the most attractive towns in Germany. Nestling amidst beautiful, unspoiled countryside and still with a largely intact walkable town wall with medieval fortifications.

The highest Bavarian town stands in the foothills of the Alps, marking the end of the `Romantic Road`. Füssen`s landmark is the 15th century Hohes Schloss (High Castle), an impressive gothic complex; very well preserved, it hosts nowadays an art gallery focused on Renaissance and late gothic masterpieces.

The area of Hohenschwangau is a stunning one that has inspired poems, operas and even Disney movies. It`s crowned by the Harry Potter-esque Neuschwanstein Castle, scattered with alpine lakes and thick fir forests. The area offers excellent hiking, the Museum of Bavarian Kings, breathtaking beauty of the alpine peaks and valleys, and two former Royal Castles to explore.

Würzburg the capital of Lower Franconia is one of the loveliest baroque cities in the country and became famous as the center of Franconian wine production. Called "the town of Madonnas" because of the more than 100 statues of its patron saint that adorn the house fronts, it is also the best place to start driving the Romantic Road.

WHY THE ROMANTIC ROAD?

Germany`s Romantic Road is a 261-mile scenic route through the forests and mountains of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Its northern endpoint is Würzburg, a wine-region city known for the Residenz, an 18th-century baroque palace with a Tiepolo fresco. Your journey will take you through unspoiled nature, picturesque towns with city walls, towers, and half-timbered houses, hidden monasteries, medieval castles, and romantic hotels.
