The word Ribatejo literally means 'up the Tagus' in Portuguese. This area is the only traditional province of Portugal not to be situated either on the coast or along the border with Spain; and history and gastronomy reign supreme here. One of the most treasured parts of the former Portuguese Kingdom, the Ribatejo welcomes visitors who want to try such delicacies as piglet Ferreirense, tripe, sweet custard, and seafood such as crawfish. Let your cares melt away as you travel up the Tagus, first visiting Santarem and then Abrantes, stopping at sights at your leisure. Then, travel inland and explore the cities and towns adjacent to the Tagus's tributaries, the Nabao and Zezere rivers, such as Ferreira do Zezere, Tomar, and Ourem.
