Trip Summary
2 nights in Porto
Porto (also known as Oporto) is the second city of Portugal, and a hub for the northern part of the country in terms of arts, entertainment, culture and shopping. Previously conquered by the Celts, Romans and Moors, Porto has been a jewel in the Portuguese royal crown for nearly a millennium. The city offers art treasures, medieval cathedrals, museums, shopping, and delicious food and drink, all while tourists enjoy breathtaking views of the River Douro, which empties into the Atlantic just three miles from the city center. Don't miss the center, in particular the Ribeira neighborhood, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit Porto Cathedral (Sé), Clerigos Church and Tower, Palacio da Bolsa, the gardens at the Palacio de Cristal, Ponte Dom Luis I, the port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, the Funicular dos Guindais, Praça da Liberdade, Avenida dos Aliados, and so much more!
2 nights in Braga
Braga has been an archiepiscopal seat and pilgrimage site for centuries. There are a lot of beautiful churches to see here as well as the palace of the Archbishop dating from the 14th century. Another important sight is the 16th Century Palácio dos Biscainhos. Just east of the town is one of Portugal's most famous tourist attractions, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Igreja de Bom Jesus de Monte, is an impressive Baroque staircase symbolic of the 14 Stations of the Cross that leads upwards to a late 18th Century Church.
Visit Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga Cathedral, Sameiro Sanctuary, Santa Barbara Garden, Theatro Circo, and more!
2 nights in Guimaraes
Guimarães was the first capital of Portugal and the hometown of the first king of Portugal, Don Afonso Henriques. In 2001 the town's historical center was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The main attraction is the city's famous castle that dominates the skyline with eight square towers and an 89 foot high dungeon. Nearby, you can visit the Iron Age pre-Celtic settlement of Citânia de Briteiros, one of Portugal's most impressive archaeological sites.
Visit Guimarães Castle, Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, Historic Centre of Guimarães, Largo da Oliveira and Santiago Square, Citania de Briteiros, and more!
2 nights in Douro Valley
The Douro River Valley is one of the most beautiful areas of Portugal and is best-known for its fortified wines. The Douro wine plantations, called 'quintas', and their sprawling terraced vineyards were entered into the UNESCO World Heritage 'Cultural Landscapes' register in 2001.
