The legend of Fatima began in 1917, when three shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, witnessed a series of Marian apparitions, culminating in a spectacle witnessed by 70,000 people that many labeled 'a miracle'. The area where the children saw the Virgin Mary is now called the Sanctuary, and many chapels and basilicas are located here.
