Kotor, founded in the fifth century BCE, is one of the oldest cities in Montenegro. It sits on the Bay of Kotor, and is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Medieval-era Old Town, fortified since the time of Roman emperor Justinian; and the fortifications themselves, which were upgraded during the time of the Venetians (who called the city Cattaro). Kotor Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in town, is one of only two Catholic cathedrals in the country.

Up the coast from Budva, but south of Sveti Stefan lies Petrovac - one of the coast's more laid back and stylish resorts. Still unblemished by high-rise hotels, it retains a tranquil air absent from many of the other resorts along this particular stretch of coastline. The town's main beach is a magnificent crescent-shaped bay formed of a reddish gravelly sand and is backed by an attractive green tree lined promenade. Along the promenade, and particularly at the north end of the bay, you will find an abundance of bars, cafes and excellent seafood restaurants.
