Perugia is a lively medieval walled hilltown that is Umbria's capital. The historic center abounds with cultural and architectural masterpieces and offers one of the most extensive museum collections in Italy. Perugia is famous for chocolate and holds its chocolate festival, Eurochocolate, in mid-October. It also hosts a huge international Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, that runs for two weeks in July, as well as Music Fest Perugia which is held in August, featuring two weeks of classical music performances in historic monuments and churches. A truly pleasurable experience is to wander through the narrow streets and along the walls at the edge of town for views of the valley. It is also a good base for visiting other hill towns in Umbria such as Assisi, Spello, and Gubbio.
