Mamaia is Romania's largest seaside resort, and one of the oldest, dating back to 1905. It is located eight miles northeast of Constanta on a narrow barrier island situated between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol. It used to be a typical fisherman's village inhabited by Turks, Tatars and Lipovans where the local economy consisted of selling fish and raising Tatar horses. Today, the island, which is only five miles in length and just 300 yards wide in some spots, is jam-packed with resorts, bars, cafes, and restaurants. The main street, the Bulevardul Mamaia, runs through the western portion of the island and the beachfront is situated to the east.
