Dingle town is the heart and soul of the Dingle Peninsula. It is the most westerly town in Europe and a stronghold of the arts. In medieval times the harbor was the departure point for pilgrims traveling to the grave of St James at Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The pilgrimage was so important that the Spanish are said to have built the first church on the site of the present day Church of Ireland on Main Street, which is called St James's after the Spanish patron. Dingle was home to the famous dolphin 'Fungie' who swam with the fishing boats and in the harbour from 1984 until he was last seen in October 2020.

The River Lee flows through the city forming one of the world's largest natural harbours.
