The charming perched village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, hovering between Nice and Cannes among the Provencal hills, has long drawn a chic crowd. Picasso and Matisse were among the pioneers. It has kept much of its medieval allure, and added a world-class art gallery to the mix. With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, Saint-Paul has a uniquely mild climate. Most of the stone houses along rue Grande are from the 16th and 17th centuries, many still bearing the coats of arms placed here by the original builders. Today most of them are antique shops, art-and-crafts galleries, and souvenir gift shops.

On the coast in the western Var and close to the popular coastal resorts of La Croix-Valmer and Cavalaire-sur-Mer, we recommend a visit to the vineyards and wines in this region. Gassin, Ramatuelle and La croix-Valmer are charming medieval village towns just inland from Saint Tropez offering the perfect contrast to the Riviera resorts. Make sure to take a journey on the coast road south of the Massif d'Esterel, one of the most scenic coast roads in France offering the most beautiful views in every direction.
