ISCHIA - GETTING AROUND

By Bus

Ischia is quite large and hilly, and you will need some form of transportation. The bus routes on Ischia are run by the EAV Company and connect most locations on the island. The main lines are the CS (Circolare Sinistra) and the CD (Circolare Destra) that circle the island clockwise and counterclockwise.

The bus terminal where all routes depart is in Ischia Porto, a small lot just a few steps from the ferry arrival pier. You can purchase tickets and request information here. You can also purchase tickets in a number of locations around the island, including newspaper stands and cigarette shops. Most hotels also sell bus tickets. Otherwise, buy your tickets on board for an extra fee.

Ticket Prices: A single ride costs about €1.50, if you purchase the ticket on board it will cost about €2. Daily passes are about €4.50; weekly passes start at about €15.50. Children under six travel free.

By Car

You can bring your car on Ischia all year round. It`s convenient to have a car to explore the island, though there is heavy traffic in the summer. Parking is also hard to find, and abundant only in quiet areas like Barano and Serrara Fontana. In the larger towns, you will need to park in pay lots (around €2/hour).

Note: During high season, car access to the island is restricted and the number of car slots is limited; if you are planning to bring your car, check with the transport company and make your reservations well in advance.

By Scooter

Renting a scooter is the most convenient option for visiting Ischia in complete independence without the hassle of traffic. There are scooter rental agencies across the island and you don`t need to reserve a scooter in advance. Just be sure you have experience driving a scooter to be able to navigate the heavy car, scooter, and pedestrian traffic, as well as rough roads.

All scooters on Ischia can carry two passengers, and you must wear a helmet.

By Taxi

Taxis are everywhere on Ischia, and there are also `Calessini`, or traditional tuk-tuks transformed into charming island taxis, but these have been on the decline in recent years. You can hire one to take you around the entire island or to be used like a regular taxi.

There are taxi stands strategically located around the island, including Piazza degli Eroi and Piazzetta San Girolamo in Ischia Porto; Piazza Bagni in Casamicciola; and Piazza Girardi in Lacco Ameno. Typically taxis charge a minimum in the small town of Ischia, while drivers use the meter for trips outside town.

By Boat

Water taxis are a great way to get around quickly between beaches. They leave from Ischia Ponte, Sant`Angelo, and Maronti and can drop you off at beaches that are only accessible via sea. They are often less expensive than a regular land taxi to get around the island`s coastline. Routes and fares vary depending on the port and beach location, but start as low as €2.50 and go up to about €15.

A trip around the island of Ischia by boat allows you to see the coast-line that otherwise is not visible. Boat tours leave from Forio, Ischia, Sant`Angelo, Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola. If leaving from the port of Sant`Angelo, sailing westwards you can see the Elephants Grotto then in front of you there is a deep inlet which is low and sandy in one part and in others high and rocky which continue until you reach Punto Chiarito, passing the beaches of Cava Ruffano, Cava Grado and the Green Grotto.

The average price for a boat tour around the island by private boat is around €200. You can also rent your own boat and tour yourself around.
