KINSALE - GETTING AROUND

On foot

Kinsale is a great place to explore on foot. Lower Road and Scilly Walk are very popular for strolling, and the town center is very compact, with most sights fitting into an area of approximately 25 acres. Some sights may require more walking, but by and large Kinsale is a great place to walk for people of all activity levels. The areas and towns to the north and west can be explored on foot as well, but walking to these towns and villages from Kinsale would be too taxing; we recommend some sort of private transport in order to get there.

By bus

Local Link Cork (www.locallinkcork.ie) offers limited bus service to the rural regions of western County Cork, including Kinsale. Bus service leaves multiple times daily from Pier Road`s bus stop in Kinsale, traveling to Clonakilty, Garretstown, Garrylucas, the Old Head of Kinsale, and Charles Fort. One-way tickets from Kinsale to Clonakilty cost €6. There is also an evening bus on Fridays and Saturdays. There is a basic shuttle for tourists leaving from Pier Road traveling directly to Charles Fort, it costs €2 for a one-way ticket and €3 for a return. For timetables specific to your journey, visit www.locallinkcork.ie/timetables.

By taxi

Taxi fares in Kinsale will be similar to those in Cork City, with flagfall at approximately €4 and €2.25 extra for each mile traveled. The main taxi company in Kinsale is Kinsale Cabs (Market Square, +353 21 470 6853, www.kinsalecabs.com), which offers taxi services, tours, and limousine services. You can book online and inquire about specific prices via e-mail or by telephone. Kinsale is small and does not have its own taxi rank, so it is best to reserve your taxis in advance. In theory, cabs can be hailed from the street, but it is not common.

By car

We recommend renting your own car if you will be exploring the N71 motorway west of Kinsale, allowing you to see all the sights between there and Baltimore Harbor, a little less than 50 miles away. Keep in mind that you will be picking up your car when you arrive in Ireland at Cork Airport and not in Kinsale. This should be easy to remember as there is no place to rent a car in Kinsale to begin with.

By bicycle

There are a number of routes you can traverse if you want to cycle on your vacation. You can bike on Scilly Walk, travel down to the Old Head of Kinsale, and even head west toward Clonakilty. The main bike rental shop in Kinsale is called Wild Atlantic Sports (+353 71 103 2317, www.wildatlanticsports.com), which offers a half-day rental for around €20 and a full day rental for around €30.
