COSTA VERDE - CORSICA - TOWNS AND VILLAGES

Cervione

Cervione is an enchanting village nicknamed `the balcony by the sea`. The village is located 31 miles south of Bastia in the region of Compoloro. Overhanging the oriental plain, the village can be seen from the sea and the scenery is spectacular. The center of the village is very pleasant to wander with an impressive baroque church, Saint-Erasme, a museum of art and fountains, surrounded by wooded hillsides. On the square of the church, one can admire an Episcopal palace as well as the house of the canons from the beginning of the 17th-century. One side of the main street is lined with quaint cafes, and the other side offers spectacular panoramic views.

Penta-di-Casinca (Folelli)

The village of Pento-di-Casinca is situated in the micro-region of Casinca about 19 miles south of Bastia. Since 1973, the village has been classified as the `picturesque site of the department of Corse`. Pento-di-Casinca is built on a rocky outcrop from where it gets its name, Penta comes from the word `Pentone` meaning large rock. As you wander the streets you`ll discover beautiful stone houses with slate roofs, along with stunning views of the plain towards Bastia, and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.

Ideally located by the sea, the village of Folelli, part of the same town, you will enjoy the beautiful beach of 2.5 miles long. The town is also famous for its canals and Fium`alto of its banks offering relaxing walks.

Poggio Mezzana

Poggio-Mezzana is a town in located in the district of Corte, in the Communes of the CostaVerde. It is situated between the sea and mountain offering an ideal location that overlooks a stunning panorama of the east coast of Corsica. The village consists of five hamlets: Renoso, Mazzana, Poggio, Pianella and E Murelle. Discover the cobbles streets, vaulted passageways and the beautiful authentic Corsican houses as you wander the village.

Poggio Mezzana boasts a unique view of the Tuscan islands offshore, and offers access to beautiful sandy beaches facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. Besides enjoying the sun, there are numerous water activities available and natural activities of all kinds.

The Poggio-Mezzana market is held every Sunday morning offering up Corsican charcuterie, cheese of goat and sheep, fruit and vegetables, as well as fresh fish.

San-Nicolao

San-Nicolao lies on the foothills of Mount Castello d`Osari on which to disseminate its charming villages to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, home to the resort of Moriani Plage. Enjoy strolling through the streets of the villages, leaving many hiking trails of the Costa Verde with the beautiful landscapes of lush rural Corsica in the background. Various sporting activities are offered, plus a large sandy beach.

While visiting San Nicolao, make sure to explore the parish church of San-Nicolao, the aqueduct, the memorial of Pascal Paoli, and the cascade Ucelluline. A gallery and a stone bridge connect San Nicolao to the Ucelluline Water, a wonder of Mother Nature which is an authentic scene, especially at night, when the water effluvium benefits from an illumination on the edge of exceptional landscape.

Santa-Lucia-di-Moriani

San-Lucia-di-Moriani boasts a multitude of landscapes, from foothills to coastline. Its small hamlets are made up of the very picturesque Venzolasca, Coccola, Bonaldo and Piazze, which are essentially made up of traditional houses, with beautiful stone and walls with slate roofs. While exploring this village, make sure to explore the Tomanesque Parish Church of Santa Lucia which possesses a very ancient bell tower. Also check out the the chapel of the Madonna, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this is where a procession is held in the honor of Saint Lucy every September 8th.

Santa-Maria-Poggio

Santa-Maria-Poggio, often called Poggio-di-Campoloro, lies in the micro-region of Campoloro in the heart of the Costa Verde. Straddled between the sea and mountains, the village boasts absolutely stunning landscapes. Visitors will discover the charming architecture familiar to this region and exceptional views, being that the village is backed by mountain Osari, which rises to 3,638 ft, and the island of Elba. Some highlights worth exploring are the Assumption church from the 17th century with its vault made of frescoes, the Genovese Bridge, the San Pancraziu chapel, and the presbytery site. In addition to its cultural aspects, Santa-Maria-Poggio is also the home of the Ucceluline waterfall, with its tunnels, coastal road and breath-taking views of the coastline, including the Taverna marina, a favorite stopping place for boaters.

Taglio-Isolaccio

La Tavagna: Taglio and Isolaccio, are two villages perched in the mountains opposite each other. The quaint villages located in the township of Fiumalto-d`Ampugnani are part of the district of Bastia. They are widely known in Corsica for their singers and poets` quality. The ancestral art of the paghjella has been passed down from generation to generation and still remains nowadays. You can find the church of San Mamiliano and its bell tower in Taglio as well as the church of San Michele in Isolaccio and the Mt Carmel chapel at the village center.
