EASTERN CORSICA - TOWNS AND VILLAGES

Aleria

Situated on the eastern plain of the island, Aleria is a part of the small region of Costa Serena, located between Porto-Vecchio and Bastia and is linked up to Corte by a beautiful road of mountains. It offers a long coast line of 7.5 miles and consists of sandy beaches. The town is sandwiched between two lakes, the lake of Diana and the lake of Urbino. The first is famous for its production of oysters that can be enjoyed on site. One of the most notable attractions is an ancient site that consists of a bulwark of the Greek period, a pre Roman necropolis, villas and the remains of the ancient Roman city.

The beaches in Aleria are very quiet, despite it being crowded, it is surrounded by an unspoiled nature reserve, just steps from the ancient Roman city. All around the mouth of the Tavignano, the nature reserve offers many quiet areas and stunning views of the land and the sea. The Costa Serna, where Aleria is located, offers various beautiful beaches including Ghisonaccia and Liguizzetta.

Ghisonaccia

The seaside resort of Ghisonaccia, located between the larger towns Bastia and Porto-Vecchio, is an ideal destination for a relaxing beach holiday. Apart from the wide sandy beaches, it is mainly the peace and quiet of the pleasant countryside that makes this town (and area) attractive. Although there is not much history in Ghisonaccia, there is still plenty to see and do. Check out the Lagoon of Urbino, a wetland and swampy nature reserve; the village itself with supermarkets and other shops; the surrounding countryside, which forms a patchwork of fields and forests; and the Fiumorbo, a small river that can easily be explored by canoe.

The Pinia Beach in Ghisonaccia is the wildest beach of the seaside resort and of Costa Serena. It borders the forest of Pinia (largest maritime pine forest of Corsica) south of the pond of Urbino. This sandy beach is beautiful and one of the most beautiful in Corsica. Little known, even in summer, visitors can enjoy the beach without the crowds (which is unusual in Corsida!).

Sari-Solenzara

The seaside resort of Sari-Solenzara offers a friendly atmosphere and an idyllic setting for boaters as well as walkers. The port town brings a subtle blend of natural landscapes and architectural gems. It is a charming little village with an authentic feel that exudes calm and relaxation. Within the village you`ll find a picturesque stone church, fountains and traditional houses lining narrow sunny streets. In the heart of the village, enjoy the panoramas from the `Penna` and `Monte Santu` which dominates the town and makes for a real haven of serenity.

Solenzar is host to many festivities from the months of May to October, which attracts several visitors. Tourist and locals alike also enjoy a flavors and crafts market in town every Wednesday morning, as well as a market every second Saturday of the month throughout the year. The area also brings opportunity to enjoy various recreational activities such as horse riding, climbing, canyoning, hiking, biking, and of course just lazing on the beach.
