BONIFACIO - GETTING AROUND
It`s a steep hike up to the Citadel, though if you`ve arrived by ferry at the western edge of town, it`s as quick to stride off up the slope as to walk into town center for alternatives. A touristy but easier approach is on Le Petit Train, which runs every 30 min April - Oct. Once you are in the town center, it is best to walk to explore the area.
By Bus
Several companies provide regular and daily routes to and
from Bonifacio even during weekends and public holidays as well as the
information concerning the airport shuttles provided by Figari, the airport in
Southern Corsica.
Also there is a company in Bonifacio providing a beach
shuttle during July and August. In 20 minutes you can reach the Sperone and
Piantarella beaches.
The Rossi transport company runs a bus line between the
international airport of Figari Southern Corsica and Porto-Vecchio. From
September 1st to June 30th, there are 2 to 3 round trip
bus runs every day from Monday to Saturday, excluding public holiday. From July
1st to August 31st, bus runs 4 round trips a day from
Monday to Sunday, including public holidays. It is must to change connection in
Porto-Vecchio on the Figari airport to Bonifacio run.
The bus run between Figari Southern Corisca airport and
Porto-Vecchio operates all year but the times changes each month. The cost is
typically around €4.
A bus connection is possible in Porto-Vechio to reach
Bonifacio. A
direct bus runs between Bonifacio and Porto Vecchio taking 30 min, fare is
around €9. In July and Aug this runs four times a day, 7 days a week; Sept - June
it runs twice a day Monday - Saturday. The first bus of the day from Bonifacio
connects with the onward service from Porto Vecchio to Bastia.
A
minibus runs between Bonifacio and Scopetto, where it connects to the bus for
Ajaccio (via Sartene and Propriano). In July and August this runs three times a
day, 7 days a week; Sept - June it runs twice a day Monday - Saturday. Total
journey time to Ajaccio is 3½ hours, fare is around €20.
There are several services of various types offered by the Taxis Bonifacios or rent a chauffeur-driven car or min-bus from a local private company. Small Train
Situated on the marina, just by the children`s playground,
Nono`s Petit Train will take you to the heart of the citadel of Bonifacio.
The Petit Train departs exclusively from the marina every
half hour, April - October. The drive gives you a few historical facts about
Bonifacio during your ride. Upon arrival, you are dropped in the heart of the
medieval town so you may discover the Citadel. A returning train is available
every 30 minutes.
Buy your ticket in advance
from the kiosk next to the marina TIC - but they won`t sell if the next train
is booked out. A tickets costs around €5 (flat rate), many people choose to ride
up and walk back but there`s no reduction for that.
Boat trips from the
marina are very popular and destinations include the wild nature reserve
islands of Lavezzi (with great
snorkeling), the stylish town of Porto-Vecchio or the Italian island of Sardinia. Day trips inland can easily incorporate mountain walks in
the breathtaking peaks of the Alta Rocca, visits to traditional Corsican
mountain villages and towns, or exploring the
prehistoric sites at Pianu di Levie.
Frequent ferries by Moby
Lines and Blu Navy link the town with Santa Teresa Gallura in Sardinia. They take cars, and their schedule often allows for a day-trip in
either direction. They provide a stunning way to approach Bonifacio,
negotiating the rocky Lavezzi Isles which mark the southernmost point of France.
The ferry terminal is at the western edge of town at Gare Maritime, Quai Sotta Portigliola. There are also many private
boaters that can navigate to Bonifacio by sea.
Crossing Sardinia: The Blu Navy and Mobylines companies
propose return trips every day and all year. Italy is only 7.5 miles from
Bonifacio: a good reason to spend the day and discover the Italian culture in
Santa Teresa di Gallura on a crossing that takes less than an hour.
SAS Portigliola is the maritime agency situated at the
commercial port of Bonifacio. Open all year, ferry ticket sales for all Moby
Line and Tirrenia crossings and the day and night ferries guarantee numerous
possibilities to travel between Sardinia, Italy and Corsica.
Renting a scooter, mountain bike or an electric bike are other
option for getting around Bonifacio and Southern Corsica.
ASJP is a scooter rental company situated near the port of
Bonifacio. This easy way of getting about facilitates your movement and gives
access to inaccessible paths by car all year round. This is also a great way to
fully enjoy the landscapes as well as finding easy parking. And finally, you
can reach the beaches at close range and therefore walk as little as possible.
Soot Rent is another rental company situated on the marina
of Bonifacio. Tam Tam, is located about .2 miles from the port of Bonifacio and
offers rentals of electric bikes, mountain bikes and racing bikes for adults or
children.
There is a shortage of car parks in Bonifacio, so
try to arrive early to get a space. Most of the parking is located to the left
of the marina (accessed via a one-way system).
There is also limited parking on the Bosco
peninsula beyond the Old Town, by the Marine Cemetery.
There are 2 large free-paying parking lots on the port (P1,
P2), 3 large fee-paying parking lots in the Old town (P3, P5) and 2 large
fee-paying parking lots just outside (Valli at the entrance and Monte Leone on
the road to Sant`Amanza).
There are also specific parking areas for motorbikes, for
the handicapped and a parking lot for buses, and camping cars. Plus a free of
charge Express parking lot on the port (limited to 40 minutes), free of charge
Minute parking spots all around the port and the medieval town. There is a
Minute parking just by the Tourist Office.
Several luminous billboards inform you of parking
availabilities in real time.
Parking is free of charge for the first 10 minutes and a
further 10 minutes following payment.

Parking P2, P3, P5: About €2.80 per hour; 9 hours and more will cost around €18.80.
Lost ticket will cost about €20.
