EXPERIENCE LUXEMBOURG

Overview

Nestled between France, Belgium, and Germany, the tiny nation of Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe with a rich cultural heritage since it has many UNESCO World Heritage Sites listed but also wonderful natural areas to discover, such as the Mullerthal region. It is renowned for its high standard of living, thriving economy, and multilingual culture. As the world’s only grand duchy, its cinematic capital city was once an imposing fortress that used its dramatic topography to battle waves of Spanish and French armies, adding to its rich and storied past.

Despite being a highly developed country, Luxembourg remains incredibly accessible. Its modern infrastructure includes free public transportation for both locals and visitors, making it easy to explore. While the urban areas are dynamic and cosmopolitan, the real magic lies beyond the city. We highly recommend venturing into the countryside, where you’ll discover dense forests, scenic hiking trails, charming villages, wineries, and picturesque rivers ideal for cruises.

Though often overlooked due to its small size, Luxembourg is a hidden gem for those who make the journey. Here, you’ll find expansive hiking wilderness, tranquil wine regions, quirky local festivals, and one of the most uniquely captivating capitals in Europe. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, or simply in search of a lesser-known European adventure, Luxembourg is sure to surprise you.

Things To See & Do

Explore the Old Quarter in Luxembourg City, the perfect place to kick off your trip and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area is by far the most picturesque part of the city with the remnants of the fortress and the riverside. The various levels of the old part of the city make for a great few hours of exploring while enjoying the view. We also suggest a Hop-on Hop-off Tour of the city which will provide great insight into the history and development while showcasing all the attractions of the capital city.

Make some time to visit the National Museum of History and Art, nestled in the Fish Market part of the old town center. Here you`ll find a huge range of items such as tools, coins, weapons, historical documents, and photographs. Much of the artwork is focused on the Gallo-Roman era and tells the story of social and religious life through the ages for those who call Luxembourg home. If you like modern art, you won`t be disappointed and it is filled with works of art from the 20th century.

Discover “the most beautiful balcony of Europe” at Chemin de La Corniche. The view you get of the lower town is just fabulous! The road ends at the Palace of Justice where you’ll find an elevator connecting the upper and the lower part of the city. Either go down or make your way to Cathedral Notre-Dame de Luxembourg. The cathedral has an impressive interior with many organic shapes that you don’t often find. It is also famous for its crypt which contains the graves of members of the Luxembourg Royal Family.

Afterward, head to the famous Chocolate House for a cup of chocolate. You will find more than 30 different types of homemade hot chocolate, and it is located right across the street from the Royal Palace.

Wander through the Wenzel Trail. This trail provides information about the various aspects of the natural environment and the man-made environment in the city of Luxembourg (fortress, old town, and the parts of the town outside the walls). The trail will show you highlights, such as Bock du Casemates, Chemin de la Corniche and the Grund, but also a few lesser known spots.

The Casemates, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are basically tunnels forming a strong defensive network together with forts, rings and other buildings. The tunnels house workshops, bakeries, shops, and provided shelter to the soldiers during wars. These days, 10 miles of the tunnels remain.

The Wenzel walk ends at the Grund, a great place to grab lunch at one of the cool restaurants or cafes in the area. Relax and take in the ambiance before heading out for some further exploration of the city.

Cycle around the city or through the cycle paths outside the city. Throughout the region, there are well-marked cycle paths and mostly in remote locations away from traffic.

Visit a Museum (or two). There are seven main museums in Luxembourg; all conveniently located along a stretch known as 'museum mile’. From the Museum of Modern Art-Mudam to the Natural History Museum, you`ll be sure to find something you`ll enjoy seeing!

Explore the Countryside! With a compact size of just 999 square miles, this enchanting country makes it easy to travel between attractions, ensuring you can experience a lot in a short time. No destination is too far! Take a day trip to explore breathtaking castles, savor delicious local cuisine, and wander through lush green forests.

Discover the Castles of Luxembourg. Boasting 130 castles, each with its own rich history and hidden stories, Luxembourg is a dream destination for history lovers. Among the most popular are Bourglinster, Larochette, and Vianden, each offering stunning views over the cities below.

For a truly magical experience, we highly recommend Vianden Castle, a breathtaking fairytale fortress perched above an equally enchanting town. This picturesque destination has captivated travelers for centuries—including the famous French writer Victor Hugo.

While in the region, visit Clervaux, home to a striking church, a monastery, and a beautifully restored castle. Inside the castle, you'll find The Family of Man, a world-renowned photography exhibition curated in the 1950s, as well as a fascinating model museum showcasing the castles of Luxembourg. Additionally, history buffs can explore a museum dedicated to the Battle of the Ardennes, providing a deeper insight into the country’s past.

Go hiking through breathtaking landscapes. More than a third of Luxembourg is surrounded by vast open plains, rolling hills, and parks which are home to dense forests. Its diverse terrain offers countless scenic trails, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers.

One of the most spectacular areas to explore is Müllerthal, often called "Little Switzerland" for its stunning landscapes. This hiker’s haven features a network of wooded highlands, dramatic sandstone rock formations, steep cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and mysterious caves - perfect for an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
