City Center
The city center is
quaint and charming, known for its medieval center (Altstadt), it is a historic
heart amidst modern urban districts. The old town, encircled by the undamaged
14th-century town wall, is finely restored and maintained with
several ancient buildings, numerous historic towers and spectacular gates of
the past. Be ready to walk everywhere and absorb the charm of
the city that will make you feel as if you stepped back in time - there`s a
thousand years of history packed between its cobbles.
As you walk the cobbled
streets of the wonderfully preserved Medieval city, you`ll find many charming
boutiques, tons of cafes, bakeries, tasty restaurants serving German and Franconian fare, and meat markets with
a wonderful variety of delectable meats. Every street is full of colorful and
picturesque old buildings and scenic views. Walking the city walls is a nice
way to get a sense of the town horizon and the medieval structures in
the city, as well as to explore the remaining guard towers. This walk also
offers excellent views and photographic opportunities.
Outskirts
Nestled amidst beautiful, unspoiled countryside, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is situated in Franconia, a region of northern Bavaria that formerly consisted of several small states before it was given to Bavaria. The outskirts offer stunningly beautiful nature with mountains, quaint villages, spas and health retreats, as well as plenty of outdoor activities such as canoeing, hiking, biking, skiing and more. Summer activities typically stretch from late May to November and winter generally lasts from about late December until April.
