City Center
Situated at the foot of the Alps, the city of Füssen offers a pedestrianized old town with beautifully colored buildings, Bavarian architecture and charming cobblestoned streets. This area is the perfect place to stroll with a number of international and regional shopping boutiques, as well as all sorts of restaurants and cafes. This is where you`ll also find numerous bakeries serving up a wonderful array of bread and cakes.
Füssen city center is small enough that it is easy to get around on foot, and it is the best way to see the town. There is a lively atmosphere with quiet alleyways great for wandering. Staying in the city center offers a great central location with lots to do and easy access to get in and out to tour around the area.
Outskirts
The greater Königswinkel area, the region in the Allgäu around the city of Füssen, includes famous Castle Neuschwanstein and the towns of Füssen, Schwangau, Pfronten and Reutte. Characteristic of the region include the numerous (royal) castles - Hohenschwangau Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, the High Castle Füssen , the ruins of Falkenstein Castle, which was intended as a second fairytale castle under Ludwig II, as well as the castle ruins Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg. These cultural sites are positioned on hilly landscape with numerous lakes, including Forggensee , Bannwaldsee , Hopfensee and Alpsee, in front of the foothills of the Ammergau Alps and the Tannheimer Berge.
The Bavarian countryside is absolutely beautiful with lush green fields, forests, lakes and mountains all close by to explore. The area in the outskirts allows you to escape the crowds into the landscape with opportunities for walking, cycling, swimming and skiing.
