EXPERIENCE MONTE CARLO
Overview
Monaco is undeniably the world’s most famous micro-state, rivaled only by the Vatican. It also holds the title of the second smallest country on the planet, spanning just 0.77 square miles. Yet, despite its compact size, Monaco is brimming with activities, rich history, and endless possibilities.
Nestled at the foot of the Alps, where the mountains dramatically meet the Mediterranean, this tiny principality seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern sophistication. It offers everything you’d expect from a historic city that has evolved with the times, plus a generous dose of luxury and glamour, catering to jet-setters and the global elite.
However, Monaco is far more than just a playground for the rich. Within its borders, you'll find the iconic fortress, the legendary casino, a dazzling selection of luxury hotels, and even a football stadium home to its remarkably strong team. The city also boasts an ice rink, a circus tent, multiple museums, a zoo, Olympic-sized swimming pools, an opera house, an exotic garden, concert venues, three harbors, and an endless variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, and nightclubs.
Beyond its attractions, Monaco maintains a vibrant calendar of events year-round. From horse shows and tennis tournaments to cultural festivals and high-profile gatherings, there’s always something happening. And, of course, the city comes alive with the world-famous Formula 1 Grand Prix.
All of this is packed into less than a square mile, yet despite being a premier global destination, Monaco never feels overcrowded, just glamorous and fascinating.
Things To See & Do
Explore Monte Carlo on an Open-Top Bus Tour, highlighting its top attractions. Hop on and off at 12 key sights across the Principality, making it easy to discover the city's iconic landmarks at your own pace.
Experience the glamour of Monte Carlo at night, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Port of Monaco. Take in breathtaking seaside views from the stunning Place du Casino terrace. As Monaco’s most affluent district, Monte Carlo attracts the rich and famous, making it perfect for people-watching and fine dining. Choose from three Michelin-starred restaurants or explore a variety of other exceptional dining options. Stroll along fashionable shopping streets like Avenue de la Costa, home to luxury boutiques ideal for browsing and window shopping.
Discover the Jardin Exotique, a stunning botanical garden located in Monaco’s modern Fontvieille district, just outside the historic center. This lush oasis offers breathtaking sea views and an impressive collection of exotic plants from Africa and Latin America. With over 7,000 varieties of succulents thriving in ideal conditions, the garden is a paradise for plant lovers.
Within the gardens, visit the Observatory Cave, once home to prehistoric humans, where you can admire striking stalactites and stalagmites. The Anthropology Museum, also on-site, showcases artifacts from the pre-Roman and Roman periods, offering a fascinating glimpse into early civilization.
Visit the Prince’s Palace of Monaco (Palais du Prince), the historic residence of the world’s oldest monarchy. Originally built in the 13th century as a Genoese fortress, it offers breathtaking views that once served a strategic defensive purpose during the Middle Ages. When the Prince and his family are away (indicated by the absence of the flag on the tower), visitors can explore the State Apartments, featuring lavish interiors such as the Blue Room, the Mazarin Room, and the Empire-style Throne Room.
During the summer, the Main Courtyard transforms into a venue for enchanting concerts. A must-see tradition is the Changing of the Guard ceremony, held daily at 11:55 AM in front of the palace, offering a glimpse into Monaco’s royal heritage.
Just a two-minute walk from the Princes Palace is the beautiful Roman-Byzantine-style Monaco Cathedral, the famous burial place of the Princes of Monaco. It also contains the grave of Grace Kelly, the actress-turned-princess of Monaco. Built between 1875 and 1884, you`ll be impressed by the beauty and regal features which include a white altar, dating from 1500, and an exquisite grand organ which is used for religious services that take place every Sunday at 10 am. The cathedral is open to the public with free admission.
Stroll around Monaco’s harbor. Packed with luxury yachts, including the Prince`s private vessel, the port is a pleasant area to stroll. There are many restaurants with outdoor seating to enjoy the lovely setting. We recommend you take a catamaran ride around Monaco to see the impressive coastline.
Explore the Musee Océanographique , one of the world`s oldest aquariums that opened in 1910. The building is quite impressive, situated almost 300 ft above sea level, offering a dramatic setting. The museum boasts valuable scientific collections with finds from the exploration of Prince Albert I and the discoveries of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. There are three Aquariums here (the Tropical Aquarium, Mediterranean Aquarium, and the Shark Lagoon) and over 6,000 specimens to be discovered.
Tour the Monaco Grand Prix. The famous Formula One Monaco Grand Prix race takes place in Monte-Carlo every year on the last weekend in May. This is the only car race in the world that is held on city streets. First organized in 1929, it has become one of the most prestigious and glamorous races in the world by film stars, celebrities and millionaires. With its tight corner, changes in elevation and a tunnel, it is also one of the most dangerous despite being the shortest track of the Formula One roster.
Continuing with the car theme, from the Grand Prix tour we recommend taking a short walk over to the Museum of Antique Automobiles (Collection of Vintage Cars). This collection exhibits Prince Ranier III of Monaco`s vintage cars, bringing together a total of 85 antique cars of various vintages and models, all made by prestigious European and American car companies. Car enthusiasts will love it and even non-car enthusiasts will find the museum an enjoyable experience.
Visit the Monte-Carlo Casino, a masterpiece of architecture and a true symbol of Monaco’s capital. This iconic landmark has graced the screen in James Bond films like Never Say Never Again and GoldenEye and served as the inspiration for the casino in Ian Fleming’s debut Bond novel, Casino Royale. A visit here is a must, whether you’re admiring its opulent décor, exploring its diverse gaming options, or simply soaking in the extravagance. It’s also the most sophisticated spot in town to enjoy a cocktail while listening to live music.
The grand casino also contains the city’s opera and ballet, fitting right into this elegant scene. The auditorium of the Opera House is entirely decorated in red and gold. Here you can enjoy mostly classic operas such as works by Mozart, Rossini, and Puccini, but also hosts other musical recitals, concerts, and ballet performances. The Opera Season runs from November through June.
