ST RAPHAEL - NEIGHBORHOODS

The Heart of Town and Old Town

The small historical Old Town lies inland offering narrow shaded streets, once home of Saint-Raphael`s farmers. Nowadays, this neighborhood hosts a daily covered outdoor market with flowers, vegetables and fruit stands, and local delicacies. You`ll find the only intact ancient structure, the Eglise San Rafeu, the 12th-century church is the third to stand on this site where a watchtower sits atop one of the chapels offering magnificent views over the bay. Some points of interest you will find here are the Notre Dame de la Victoire Basilica, The Archaeological Museum, Promenade des Baines, and the Jardin Bonaparte.

The Vieux Port area offers pleasure boats, diving schools, and island excursion vessels that line the quay. Here you`ll find the new Jardin Bonaparte gardens, a beautiful area for a stroll by the sea and host of a lovely children`s playground. The gardens serve as an outdoor venue for summer concerts and shows.

Valescure

Valescure or Curing Valley (Valley of Hearing) built on the heights of Saint-Raphael is also called the `golf district.` This neighborhood is a quiet residential area, with its succession of beautiful villas, prestigious hotels, and tourist residences.

Boulouris

Formerly called `boulerie,` Boulouris is a residential area very much appreciated for its quietness, and its proximity to many services such as shops, train station, etc. A small market is held here every Monday. The neighborhood has 9 lovely beaches, which resemble creeks because of the small rocky ears that naturally shape the seaside. These beaches are all accessible by following the Sentier du Littoral, leaving from the port of Santa Lucia. The area also extends inland, to the wooded areas where there is another trail, the Sentier de l`Armitelle.

Le Dramont

L`lle d`Or is the most famous landmark in Le Dramont, the island of gold, a private island to the east of the city of Saint-Raphael, facing the Dramon cap. This small island is composed of russet rocks and surmounted by a tower reminiscent of the Middle Ages said to have been the inspiration for the Black Island in Herges` The Adventures of Tintin series.

The landing beach of the Dramont was the main site of landing in Provence. It was here that 20,000 GI`s of the 36th Texas Division of the US Army landed on August 15, 1944, and established a beachhead in armored vehicles. Other sights that visitors may enjoy include the Esterel forest, which is accessible from Cap Dramont by the coastal path. The picturesque port of Le Poussai and a pleasant shaded beach also make for a relaxing spot to getaway. The lake of the Dramont is another place to enjoy water sports and activities.

Agay

Agay is a natural gateway to the Esterel Mountains nestled between Cape Dramont and the tip of the Baumette. You will appreciate the three sandy beaches, the summit of its rocks and Rastel, overlooking the bay and offering a breathtaking panorama. Preserved throughout the years, this area is one of the jewels of the Riviera offering activities `Sport and Nature,` shops and services that make it a beautiful area to enjoy.

Antheor Le Trayas

The neighborhoods of the Antheor and Le Trayas are located where the Esterel mountain range meets the Mediterranean Sea. Here you will find a dozen coves and small beaches in a wilderness setting with scenery of contrasting colors between the red rock and the blue sea. The steep streets of Le Trayas lead you on the heights to one of the most beautiful panoramas of the region. Follow the road la Corniche d`Or leading to Cannes for the most magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea and Cap Roux.
