WESTERN FRENCH RIVIERA - TOWNS AND VILLAGES

St Raphael

St Raphael is a laid back seaside resort town southeast of Frejus. The town is very well maintained with a small harbor, and beaches to either side of the harbor. St Raphael is one of the oldest resorts on the coast with evidence that wealthy Romans spent their summers here over 2000 years ago. Today, the resort city has a busy downtown that includes a casino and a Vieille Ville (Old Town). It`s a major sailing center with a Vieux Port that includes pleasure boats, diving schools and island excursion vessels that line the quays. The port has a rich history: Napoleon landed here on his triumphant return from Egypt in 1799; it was also here in 1814 that he cast off for Elba.

Frejus

Frejus, located immediately west of Saint-Raphael and halfway between Saint Tropez and Cannes, is an ancient military port and Roman city. This city is filled with impressive ancient remains and monuments that include a Roman theater, the Port Dorée, the Porte des Gaules, and the Cocteau Chapel. Frejus is popular with families due to its numerous sandy beaches and beautiful red-hued Esterel mountain backdrop.

Les Issambres

Les Issambres is a seaside resort destination that stretches along almost 5 miles of inlets and fine sandy beaches. The town is situated on the beautiful coastline of the Bay of St. Tropez, between the Mediterranean Sea and the wooded hills of the Massif des Maures. Just east of the beach is a popular sailing center with boat rentals, a sailing school, and a wide variety of water activities. Les Issambres offers a number of restaurants as well as a variety of shops.

Sainte-Maxime

Ideally located in the heart of the Saint Tropez bay, Sainte-Maxime provides endless beaches and breathtaking views in every direction. The charming seaside town is a family friendly destination offering almost 4 miles of sandy beaches to relax and enjoy. Surrounded by the red cliffs of the Massif des Maures, the town is protected from harsh weather. You`ll find the town boasts a wide range of sports and leisure activities suitable for all levels and ages.

Grimaud

The medieval village of Grimaud is in the heart of the Massif des Maures, Var. The charming town offers cobbled streets, Romanesque church, ruins of an 11th-century castle, ramparts and renovated historic houses. Built on a hillside, the perched village of Grimaud offers magnificent panoramic views of the coasts.

Port Grimaud

Port Grimaud, built on canals in the Venetian style, is on the coast between Cannes and Marseilles in the bay of Saint Tropez. The seaside town is used as an access point for shuttle boats to Saint Tropez or to catch Le Petit Train de Grimaud, which makes a circuit from the port to the historic inland village. The town has all the charm of an old French town despite only being built in the 60s onward with beautiful French `Fishermans` style houses resembling those in Saint Tropez. Here, you`ll find restaurants and cafes galore, a market twice a week, boat tours of the canals and a waterbus to Saint Tropez.

Gassin

Gassin, perched high up on a rock above the Mediterranean Sea, this village is classified amongst the`most beautiful villages of France.` The historic village is small with narrow, medieval winding streets and ancient houses. The streets are picturesque, with pretty stone-facade houses, remnants of the 13th-century walls and entry ports. The location offers exceptional views overlooking vineyards, woods and the gulf of SaintTropez. Look out for the old well and the street call l`Androuno, claimed to be the narrowest street in the world. The village of Gassin is closely linked to the village of Ramatuelle: the villages were both originally created to allow the locals to escape the pirates. Today, the center of the old village of Gassin offers nice terrace café-restaurants, a few shops and a couple of hotels. The historic center is the best place to explore the old streets and medieval remnants of the village and enjoy the views out across the peninsula.

La Croix-Valmer

La Croix-Valmer is an attractive coastal village on the Coted`Azur, located southwest of Saint Tropez. The town offers beautiful belle-opoque villas and several lovely beaches, as well as scenic coastal paths with magnificent far reaching views of the Mediterranean Sea. La Croix-Valmer offers seven sandy beaches with top-rated quality waters.

Cavalaire-sur-Mer

Cavalaire-sur-Mer, once a fishing village, it is now a beautiful coastal resort, built around long sandy beaches on the Cote d`Azur in the Var department of Provence. Le Royal-Canadel-sur Mer

Le Royal-Canadel-sur Mer, located on the west coast of the Massif des Maures, is a tiny village, co-joined in a single commune. The villages are nestled in the pine forests against the edge of the Mediterranean, situated along the D559 which goes along the coast. There are villas above and below the road on the hillside facing the sea with views of L`lle du Levant and L`lle de port-cros. Cavaliere

Cavaliere is located on the most southerly bay of coastal Var, situated on the cliff road (route D555) between Le Lavandou and St. Maxime. The town has a modern port, beautiful streets, café terraces, and Roman ruins. Cavaliere offers a long stretch of fine sand beaches, lined with pine trees with water sports activities for the whole family.

Le Lavandou

Le Lavandou, located on the shores of the Mediterranean and at the foot of the Massif des Maures, between Toulon and Saint Tropez. The city, also called the city of dolphins and whales, is a modern resort town offering a broad range of leisure, entertainment, festivities, shopping, and an array of great restaurants. Le Lavandou has over 7 miles of coastline with 12 sandy beaches. Formerly a small fishing port, today the city is a major international marina and sports fishing port.

Bormes les Mimosas

Bormes les Mimosas is just inland from the Cote d`Azur, located halfway between Toulon and Saint Tropez. The town is one of the most florally decorated towns of France with their streets lined with flowers, trees, and bushes, particularly mimosas. The commune of Bormes-les-Mimosas includes a marina (Port de Bormes), the new town and the old village. There are several exclusive beaches in the area, as well as smaller, hidden beaches between the rocky coves and inlets to the south of Cap Benat.
