How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Kilkenny has its own local airfield, but nothing close to a regional airport, let alone an international one. The closest international airport to Kilkenny is Dublin Airport (IATA code DUB), approximately 75 miles northeast of Kilkenny.

Bus Eireann, a national long-haul bus company, runs multiple routes per day from Dublin Airport to Kilkenny bus station (adjacent to the railway station). Roundtrip fares are priced in the €30 range and can be bought online at national.buseireann.ie.

There will be a taxi stand located just outside the train station (next to the bus station) and a taxi will be available to take you to your hotel.

How do I get from the train station to my hotel?

Kilkenny (MacDonagh) train station has a taxi stand situated across the street from the entrance to the station. Taxis are metered and the fares start at under €5, with at least €1.50 added per mile.

How do I get around Kilkenny using public transport?

There is no public transportation service that serves Kilkenny. The train (run by Irish Rail) and bus (Bus Eireann, JJ Kavanagh and Sons, etc.) run nationwide, as the Republic of Ireland is a fairly compact country. A planned bus service (consisting of two routes at the moment) is rumored to begin operations in Kilkenny city in 2018.

How do I call/hail a taxi?

There are only four taxi companies operating in Kilkenny, and they are fairly visible, sitting at taxi stands throughout the city. Just flag one down from the sidewalk or take the next available taxi from the closest taxi stand. Most attractions can be reached for less than €10.

I will have a car in Kilkenny. Where can I park?

For as small as the city is, Kilkenny offers nearly 5,000 public parking spaces in its city limits, with many of them around High Street and The Parade in the Medieval Mile, and around Kilkenny (MacDonagh) train station.

Is Kilkenny a walking city?

Kilkenny is a great city to explore on foot. For sights which are outside the city center, like the Kilfane Glen and Waterfall, it is recommended to either drive or take a taxi.

Are there long lines at the museums? Does it make sense to buy a museum pass?

Kilkenny Castle is the city`s most-visited tourist attraction, and even during summertime, peak wait times are minimal (under 15 minutes). Queues are rare at most sights in the city (except for perhaps the Smithwick`s Experience). The Medieval Mile Pass can be bought online for under €40 at www.kilkennychamber.ie and while it won't give you front of the line privileges, it does give you free admission to a number of Medieval Mile sights and discounted prices at nearby restaurants.

Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency of Ireland is the euro (€). U.S. dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. ATMs can be found at the train station and many locations throughout the city.

What are the best areas for shopping?

St. Kieran Street is the section of town that is well-known for its mom and pop stores, selling everything from vintage clothing to handicrafts. If you want to shop at stores popular in the UK/Ireland and North America (think Marks and Spencers, H&M, etc.), MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre most likely has what you`re looking for. I want to bike on my vacation. Where can I rent a bicycle in Kilkenny?
