KEFALONIA - GETTING AROUND

By Car

The largest and most mountainous of the Ionians, distances to Kefalonia resorts are relatively long and buses so patchy that car rental is a must to see much of the island.

Roads are generally good but driving along precipitous mountain passes can be a hair-raising experience. From Argostoli, a number of major roads means that it is very simple to reach places around Kefalonia, such as Fiskardo, Poros and Sami. However, when travelling around central Argostoli, the one-way streets can be a little confusing for some, and local drivers are often far from patient with inexperienced holiday makers driving around their island.

By Bus

You can get to almost any point on Kefalonia -- even remote beaches, villages, and monasteries -- by KTEL bus (tel. 26710/22-276 in Argostoli). Schedules, however, are restrictive and may cut deeply into your preferred arrival at any given destination.

The bus station in Argostoli is located on the southerly waterfront area and daily bus transport serves the Lassi Peninsula, with buses travelling to and from Fiskardo, Poros, Sami and also Skala. There are also further buses which travel around the eastern coast of Kefalonia, connecting Katelios with much of the island. Worth noting, buses only run between Monday and Saturday - and not on Sundays.

The Argostoli - Lassi service is hourly from 9am to 6.30pm. Two buses a day leave Argostili for Fiskardo in the north and four times daily for ports at Sami and Poros, in the east, with a couple of buses daily between Sami and Fiskardo, via Agia Efimia.

The beach resorts of Skala and Katelios get a couple of buses daily from Argostoli and there is also a Katelios, Skala, Poros service three times daily.

KTEL also operates special tours to major destinations around the island. The KTEL station is on Leoforos A. Tritsi, at the far end of the harbor road, 656 feet past Trapano Bridge.

Bus tours of Kefalonia are run by Panem Tours, worth it for some spectacular views on mountain and coastal roads.

By Taxi

If you don't enjoy driving on twisting mountain roads, taxis are the best alternative. In Argostoli, go to Vallianou (Central) Square and work out an acceptable fare. Taxis are quite reliable on Kefalonia and most taxi drivers a happy to accommodate prior arrangements, picking you up from beaches at specified times. Rates are given by the meter but drivers will offer a standard rate for popular island destinations. As usual, always agree the price before getting in the taxi. There is also a radio taxi service on 028545.

By Ferry

There are no less than four different harbors on the island (Argostoli, Fiscardo, Poros and Sami) and ferry transport is always a very useful and scenic way to travel to neighboring islands and mainland Greece.

By Moped & Motorcycle

The roads on Kefalonia are asphalt and in decent condition but are often narrow, lack shoulders, and twist around mountain ravines or wind along the edges of sheer drops to the sea. Having said that, many travelers choose to get around Kefalonia this way. Two-seater mopeds and motorcycles rent for about 30 to 40 Euros per day.
