Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia in Eastern Europe. The city is located right on the Danube River on the eastern border of the country.
The main airport is Bratislava Airport, the main train station is Bratislava Hlavna Stanica and the main bus terminal is Mlynske Nivy.
There isn't a train station or tram station at the airport, so the only way to get into Bratislava is by taxi or bus, however, the airport is very close to the city.
If you have not booked a private transfer with us, you have a few options. You can go to the taxi rank at the airport to get a taxi or download the Bolt app (similar to Uber). The app is user-friendly and pickup for Bolt passengers is just outside of arrival area next to the taxi rank. Walk out of the airport, turn left, and order your ride. It takes around 15-20 minutes to get from the airport to Old Town.
Trams are the most popular and fastest form of public transport in the city. They are reliable and on time and generally run from 5 a.m to 11:30 p.m. Buses are also readily available. Limited-stop services run on the longer routes through the city. After midnight, night buses operate in Bratislava at roughly one-hour intervals. Trolley Buses are another option that have some routes in the city center, mainly in the hilly parts. The trolley buses have a long tradition in Bratislava and have been operating for more than 100 years.
For public transportation, you can purchase the Bratislave Card in 24, 48, and 72 hour increments. This car gives you unlimited public transport usage, free entry into 18 places around Bratislava, a free walking tour, and other discounts on activities, food, and more.
The busiest time to visit is in the summer months, June to August, however, it does get quite hot. Many people visit for the day, so evenings are typically much quieter. The fall (September - November) offers beautiful, mild weather with warmer days and chilly nights. The trees changing colors throughout the city at this time is beautiful, and it's also less crowded.
If you enjoy Christmas Markets, Bratislava has a great market. It will be cold, so bundle up if you visit during the winter months. You can also easily visit the Christmas Markets in Vienna on a day trip.
Yes, Bratislava is generally considered a safe city for tourists. As always, keep your valuables hidden, and don't walk alone at night, and use other common-sense safety techniques.
What is the currency of Slovakia?Slovakia uses the Euro (EUR) as its currency. Paying by card is usually the easiest, but you will need a few dollars for cab drivers, etc. Make sure to have few euros cash on you just in case.
I don't speak Slovak. Will many people speak English?Slovak is the official language here, but many younger people speak English. The second most common language is Hungarian. We suggest you get a good English-Slovak guidebook or app on your phone and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.
What is the food like?Bratislava's food scene reflects its diverse history, blending Slovak, Hungarian, Austrian, and German influences, resulting in hearty, meat-focused dishes with a focus on potatoes, cheese, and dumplings. Pharmacies are identified by a green cross and are commonly open from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays, with limited hours on Saturdays. For 24-hour service, the University Pharmacy at Ružinov Polyclinic (Ružinovská Street 12) is available.
