HOW TO TIP IN AZERBAIJAN

In the U.S., tipping is customary and expected for everything from lackluster to outstanding service. It is an etiquette which is ingrained in all trades, from the wait staff at restaurants to our baristas, valets, cab drivers, porters, and many more trades. In Azerbaijan, tipping is not as habitual and there is no obligation to do so, however, leaving something extra is customary. The questions `when?` and `how much?` can leave some travelers confused, as the practice varies. This guide attempts to cover most situations that you, as a tourist, will encounter. Hopefully, using these `tips` will provide a smooth experience when interacting with locals in restaurants, bars, hotels, tour operators, and taxis.

Currency: Can I pay in U.S. dollars, or should I use Armenian dram?

The official currency of Azerbaijan is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN), abbreviated as ?. While some major hotels, supermarkets, and restaurants in Baku may accept credit cards, Azerbaijan remains largely a cash-based economy. It's advisable to carry local currency for most transactions.

US Dollars are commonly exchanged, and you can convert them to Azerbaijani Manat at banks and official exchange offices. For the most favorable exchange rates, it's recommended to use official exchange offices or banks rather than relying on unofficial sources.

Restaurants, Cafes, and Bars: When should I tip? How much is customary?

In many restaurants, customers are expected to leave 5-10% of the total bill. Some higher-end restaurants, especially in Baku, include a 5 - 10% service charge in the bill. If this is the case, no additional tip is necessary.

In casual eateries or tea houses, tipping is optional, but rounding up the bill is appreciated.

Hotel Staff: Who should I tip?

Porters: 1 - 2 AZN per bag

Housekeeping: 2 - 5 AZN per day, especially if staying multiple nights.

Concierge services: Tip according to the level of assistance (5- 10 AZN for special help)

Taxi Drivers: Should I tip?

Tipping isn’t expected, but rounding up the fare is a nice gesture.

If using ride-hailing apps like Bold, no tip is required, but drivers appreciate good ratings.

Tour Guides: Should I tip?

For tour guides, a 10 - 15 AZN per person per day, or more for private tours is appreciated. A tip of about 5 - 10 AZN per day is appreciated, depending on the length of the trip and service.

Overview

In general, tipping in cash (in Azerbaijani Manat) is preferred, and always check the bill first for a built-in service charge.
