SKOPJE - WHERE TO STAY
City Center
The historic center of Skopje sits on both sides of the Vardar River, starting in earnest at the Goce Delchev Bridge and traveling along the Vardar under many notable bridges, the final of which in this particular area of town is the Mother Teresa Bridge. In between you have the Walking Bridge, the Stone Bridge, the Bridge of Civilizations in Macedonia, the Art Bridge, and finally the Liberty Bridge (Boulevard Phillip II of Macedon).
On the southern side of the Vardar, the outermost boulevard circle houses such sights as the Monument to Goce Delchev, the Macedonian Orthodox Arch-Cathedral of St. Clement of Ohrid, Green Market, and parking before the pedestrian-only zones deeper in the center. Accommodations fan out along most edges of Macedonia Square, and south of the square, accommodations, restaurants, and shops are mixed alongside sights like the Feudal Tower, the Army Concert Hall, and the Mother Teresa Memorial House.
On the northern side of the river, south of Boulevard Goce Delchev, you'll find the northern portion of Macedonia Square, featuring important tourist sites such as the Macedonian National Theatre, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence, the Macedonian Holocaust Museum, Vardar Quay, the Military Horses Fountain, the Monument to Saints Cyril and Methodius, leading to Phillip II Square, where you can see the Fountain of Lions and the Fountain of Olympia. The Macedonian National Philharmonic and the Macedonian Opera and Ballet are to the east, and the National Gallery of Macedonia is to the north, across Boulevard Goce Delchev from Skopje Fortress (Kale).
The area to the north of Boulevard Goce Delchev and to the east of Skopje Fortress is the Old Bazaar, which starts just after Skanderbeg Square. This bazaar dates from the 12th century and you can find accommodations to the north and to the south of its entrance on Bitpazarska. The Ottoman-era Mustafa Paša Mosque can be found between the walls of the fortress and the Old Bazaar, just to the south of the Museum of Macedonia.
Debar Maalo
Debar Maalo is an area to the west of the historic center of Skopje, from City Park south to the Boulevard of Saints Cyril and Methodius, bordered to the west by the Boulevard Franklin Ruzvelt (their transliteration of Roosevelt) and the Boulevard of St. Clement of Ohrid. You will find most of the accommodations in this area to the north of Boulevard Partizanski Odredi. Then, above Boulevard Illinden up to the banks of the Vardar, you'll find the beautiful green space called City Park, the largest in the city, which includes Skopje City Hall, Todor Proeski National Arena, and Skopje Zoo.
Outskirts
The accommodations located along the outskirts of these areas are set in two specific spots on the map: one is near Skopje International Airport, about 15 miles east of the city center, and the other is much closer to the city center, south of the Boulevard of Saints Cyril and Methodius and north of Vodno and the cable car to the Millennium Cross. This area is mixed residential and commercial with the Mother Teresa Clinic Campus, the largest hospital complex in North Macedonia, taking up much of the area here. It is a nice change of pace from the city center, a bit more relaxed.
