Overview

Hazyview is located just south of the famous Kruger National Park, this quaint town is the gateway to the popular park and makes a great base for visiting sights and attractions in the region. There is more than meets the eye in Hazyview, not only is it an animal lover’s paradise that allows visitors the opportunity to spot “The Big 5” in the national park itself, but also to visit coffee farms, see cascading waterfalls, go horseback riding, engage with elephants or relax for the day and visit a great spa.

The big draws here are the breathtaking scenery and fantastic wildlife opportunities. This small farming town is known for its bananas, coffee, avocados, mangos, lychees, citrus fruits, and macadamias. The town of Hazyview gets its name from the shimmering haze that hovers above it during the hot summer months. Strategically situated at an altitude of 1,740 feet, east of Sabie, and west of Kruger the town sits midway between the stunning scenery of the great escarpment and the world-famous game lodges, it is a town on a crossroads with six roads that all lead to a different attraction.  

Things to see and do

Visit Kruger National Park, the main attraction nearby Hazyview is a massive world-famous park offering animal lovers, and safari enthusiasts a plethora of activities. Go on game drives, bush walks, and night drives and discover a wealth of wildlife found in the lush tropical forests, bush plains, and mountains of the park. It is home to a great number of animals including endangered species as well as elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, and a large number of birds. 

Take a safari through the Kruger National Park which lies on close to 8,000 square miles and represents 14 different systems. It is considered the best-managed African National Park and is famous for its amazing flora and fauna that attracts visitors from all over the world. On your safari tour, you will be sure to encounter various wildlife species from close up. There are tours offered in 4x4 vehicles or on foot in the park. 

Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime elephant back safari ride in Kapama Private Game Reserve. You can see these amazing animals up close in the reserve and go for a ride through the bush in a comfortable canvas-covered saddle with experienced elephant guides. 

Take an exhilarating ride on the Graskop Gorge Lift and experience the beauty of Mpumalanga, from up above. The lift travels up to 164 feet and allows visitors to absorb some of the most incredible views of the scenic verdant landscape below. There are views of the towering Three Rondavels and the majestic Blyde River Canyon. 

Visit the Shangana Cultural Village situated between the Blyde River Canyon and Kruger National Park for a unique cultural experience. Visitors are welcomed by the Shangaan People and share their way of life along with the history and rich culture of the Tsonga people. The village is set in the shade of ancient trees in a reserve of forest and grassland and offers visitors a number of activities like visiting a bustling African market where the locals make and trade their crafts. 

The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest river canyon in the world and can be reached within a short drive from Hazyview. It is located on the Panorama Route and connects to the Kruger National Park. The views here are magnificent from 2,600 feet above the river.

The Bourke’s Luck Potholes were created by water erosion over thousands of years at the confluence of the Blyde and Treur Rivers, they form a unique striking array of yellow, brown, and white cylindrical rock sculptures that appear otherworldly. 

Visit God’s Window on Drakensberg Cliff to soak in the breathtaking views of the spectacular canyons, cascading waterfalls, and forests, it overlooks a private game reserve. God’s Window lies on the 155 miles that form the path along the cliffs. Go hiking on the trails, go horseback riding or mountain biking. The lookout provides spectacular views of the exotic flora and fauna of the valley below. 

The Three Rondavels are rounded mountain tops that mark the start and end of the drive along the Blyde River Canyon. The mountain tops represent Magabolle, Mogoladikwe, and Maseroto, the three wives of Mapjaneng which is known for stopping a Swazi invasion. The views here are legendary and considered one of the highlights of the journey to Blyde River Canyon. 

The rounded mountain tops, known as the Three Rondavels, mark the start or end of the drive along the Blyde River Canyon. Similar to the traditional rondavels, or homesteads, made by locals, the mountain tops represent Magabolle, Mogoladikwe, and Maseroto, the three wives of Mapjaneng, known for stopping a Swazi invasion. The views from the rondavels are legendary and are considered, along with God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes, one of the highlights of the journey to Blyde River Canyon.
