Overview
Marsa Matruh, commonly known as Matruh, is a city in Egypt's Matrouh Governorate along the western coast. Situated west of Alexandria and the Nile Delta, this ancient city overlooks the breathtaking Mediterranean Sea. Rich in history, Matruh's origins trace back to the Ptolemaic era and earlier. During World War II, it gained strategic importance, notably during the Battle of Mersa Matruh, where the Afrika Korps, led by the renowned 'Desert Fox' General Erwin Rommel, played a key role. Matruh offers a unique blend of historical significance, serene beauty, and distinctive architecture.

Enjoy the Stunning Beaches. White sandy beaches on the clear Mediterranean waters offer a stunning setting for relaxation. The Almaza Bay Beach and the Cleopatra Beach are two must-visits. Agiba beach is a small and secluded beach located about 15 miles west of Matrough. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and is known for its idyllic natural beauty. The main beach in the town, Marsa Matrouh Beach is known for its calm waters and soft sand. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the sun with several cafes and restaurants along the beach. Qattaniya Beach is located about 12 miles west of Matrouh, it is secluded and perfect for those looking for some peace and quiet. Ageebah Beach is another beautiful beach located near Matrouh known as a great spot for snorkeling. Om El Rakham Beach, sits about 15 miles west of Matrouh and is a popular spot for fishing. It’s also not very crowded, so it is ideal for those looking for a quieter beach.
All these beaches have a common feature: clear water and warm, soft sand. On the other hand, each beach has a special element that makes it unique. All kinds of beach activities can be done, beyond swimming and sunning. There are jet skis, row and paddle boats, surfing, snorkeling, and much more.
Discover the Rich History. Take a journey through time at Rommel’s Cave Museum located inside a cave that was used by General Erwin Rommel during WWII as a hideout and command post. The museum contains some of Rommel’s personal belongings and provides a glimpse into the history of the region.
The ruins of the Temple of the Oracle are located in the Siwa Oasis. It is said that Alexander the Great visited the temple to consult the oracle. The temple is situated on a hill offering great views of the surrounding area.
It’s also worth visiting the historical site of the Battle of El Amamein to follow the tracks of the Panzer Army Africa with well-preserved memorabilia from the battles of WW II.
Experience authentic flavors and Egyptian culture at the local Souks. There are two significant and lively markets: Alexandria Street, the second major street after the Kornish, and Souq LIbya, where many products are imported, legally or illegally, from Libya. A Visit to any of these busting souks/markets offers a variety of local goods, from fresh seafood to traditional Bedouin crafts and jewelry.

Nightlife in Marsa Matrouh is very relaxed, with a few cafes and restaurants offering evening entertainment. The city is more focused on providing a serene beachside experience rather than a vibrant nightlife scene, making it ideal for those seeking tranquility.
Many hotels around the city have bars and nightclubs for those who want more action in their nighttime. The nightclub at the Beau Site Hotel is quite a nice place for having a drink and dancing. There are also places for billiards, bowling, and many other activities and games. You can also spend the night smoking shisha in oriental and modern cafes around Marsa Matruh.
