MEKNES - GETTING AROUND
The historic areas of Meknes, particularly the Medina and the Imperial City areas, are best explored on foot. These areas are compact and rich with historical sites close to each other, such as Bab Mansour, the Dar al-Mahkzen, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. However, for visiting areas outside the city center, such as the Roman ruins of Volubilis, hiring a private car or grand taxi is advisable. Keep in mind many of our packages include add-ons to Volubilis, which you can confirm during the booking process.
By petit taxiPetits
taxis are the preferred mode of public transport in Meknes, due to an
overburdened and underfunded city bus system. As in other cities in
Morocco, we recommend taking the petits taxis for trips inside Meknes
proper, including the newer portions of the city. If you'd like to go
farther afield, we recommend finding a grand taxi (colored white).
In Meknes, local petits taxis are colored light blue.
Fares should be within the 50 to 150 dirham range ($5-$15), and unless
you're traveling away from the city, you shouldn't have a price higher
than this. Agree to the fare before departing, and if you feel it's
necessary, make sure the fare is for everyone in your party, not per
person.
Meknes offers a relatively relaxed atmosphere for cyclists compared to other Moroccan cities. The city's layout, with its historical and less crowded streets, provides a unique backdrop for bicycle tours, especially around the Imperial City and the medina. These areas are filled with landmarks and markets, allowing cyclists to soak in the local culture and architecture while navigating the city. However, the terrain and urban structure outside these central areas can vary, and the lack of dedicated cycling infrastructure might require sharing the road with other vehicles. For those looking to explore beyond the city on two wheels, the surrounding countryside of Meknes offers more extensive and scenic routes. These areas provide a peaceful cycling experience with less traffic, allowing for longer rides through the agricultural landscapes and to nearby sites like Volubilis.
