Experience Duqm

Overview

Once a small fishing port, Duqm has been redeveloped to become an important tourist and business destination. However, Duqm is still characterized by its desert landscape, natural geology, and pristine sandy beaches.

Things to See and Do

Explore the unique and rare geographical nature of the Duqm Rock Garden. The rocks in the garden have been sculptured and carved by different natural phenomena throughout thousands of years. The garden portrays the varied Omani landscape as it contains numerous kinds of rocks and their magical shapes.

The Rock Garden was discovered in 2009 by an investigative delegation, since then, the Omani government has been seeking to shed light on this garden. The different natural phenomena like erosion shaped the rocks in a very attractive way, some of which are like animals, others like humans. The Garden covers an area just under 2 miles and are considered one of the most popular destinations to visit.

Go birdwatching at the Barr Al Hikman, a wetland paradise for migratory birds along the West Asian-East African Flyway making it the perfect destination for bird watchers. It is well known for its biodiversity, with enormous numbers of invertebrates hidden in the sediments, offering good food resources for the hundreds of thousands of migratory waterbirds that depend on this coastal oasis as they pass over the Arabian peninsula during their travels. These are the most important coastal wetlands in the world.

Enjoy a day at the Al Shu’ír Beach. Situated 12 miles from Central Duqm, the Al Shu’ir or Al Shuwaeir Beach is covered with golden sands and the beautiful azure of Arabian Sea Waters. There are no luxury resorts here which makes it all the more appealing to enjoy and relax in peace.

Explore the stunning natural beauty of the Sugar Dunes of Al Khaluf. Named for their fine, white dand that resembles sugar, these dunes are part of a larger coastal desert area, tha their strikingly white appearance contrasts beautifully with the blue waters of the Arabian Sea. Many visitors come here for the natural beauty and adventure such as dune bashing, camping, and amazing photo opportunities.

Explore the Pink Lagoons of Al Kahil, a natural phenomenon. The colorful, shallow waters contrast the typical azure that we typically see at the beach. The pink lagoons are a beautiful natural phenomenon that occurs in different parts of the world, formed in patches of saturated waters that sport a red hue, surrounded by thick layers of salt. The same wonders can be found in Oman in the central region of Al Wusta and at the coastal beach of Al Sharqiyah.

Visit the vast swathes of the sand at Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) known for some of the largest mega sand dunes in the world. Teeming with wildlife, ranging from reptiles to various birds of prey and smaller mammals, exploring the area is only possible by 4 WD vehicle.
