Jebel Akhdar is situated in the northeastern part of the Al Hajar Mountains in Oman, approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) southwest of Muscat, the capital city.

Fly to Muscat International Airport in Oman. Driving from Muscat to Jabal Akhdar will take just over two hours without any stops. If you want to go all the way into the mountains, there are only two options to get there. You can rent a 4x4 and self-drive, but be sure it is a 4x4. There is a checkpoint at the base of the mountain just after Birkat Al Mauz and you will not be allowed to continue otherwise.

The main road (Highway 15) into the mountains is relatively new and in great condition, however, we would recommend that you are an experienced and confident driver if you plan to drive up into the mountains yourself. And be sure to be adequately prepared. The alternative is to do a tour from Muscat.

Jebel Akhdar enjoys a moderate climate, with cooler temperatures compared to the surrounding desert due to its higher elevation. Summers are warm, with temperatures ranging from 68°F to 86°F, while winters can be chilly, with temperatures dropping to around 41°F to 50°F.

Being in the mountains can get very cool and temperatures change rapidly as you move between sun and shadow, and up and down slopes. Dress in layers and be sure to bring warm clothes.

The best time of year is March and April when the damask roses are out. These fragrant heirloom blooms are known for their sweet perfume, which fills the air during early spring. The Winter months are the most busy with tourists.
