EXPERIENCE SKOURA

Overview

Skoura is a verdant oasis situated in the shadows of the Atlas Mountains, celebrated for its extensive palm groves and the cultivation of roses. Established in the 12th century by the Almohad sultan Yacoub el-Mansour and named after its original inhabitants, the Berbers of the Haskourene tribe, Skoura represents a fertile haven in the midst of the desert. The oasis offers not only a refreshing natural retreat but also a complete immersion into the historical and architectural heritage of southern Morocco.

History and Culture

The history of Skoura is deeply intertwined with its architecture and agriculture. The oasis was meticulously planned and laid out under the guidance of Sultan Yacoub el-Mansour, forming a lush green landscape in stark contrast to the surrounding arid regions. Many of Skoura’s kasbahs, among the most beautiful in southern Morocco, are still partially inhabited, providing a living connection to the past. These kasbahs serve as enduring symbols of the region's architectural and cultural richness, with their intricate designs and earthy tones blending seamlessly into the landscape.

Weather

Skoura enjoys a desert climate that is moderated by its oasis environment. Days can be warm to hot (potentially reaching over 100 degrees F in the summertime), while nights cool off significantly (to the 50s and 60s in summer), especially outside the summer months (30s and 40s can be felt). The presence of water and vegetation in the oasis also helps temper the heat, making Skoura a pleasant escape from the more extreme desert climates found nearby.

In and Around Skoura

Within Skoura, visitors can wander through the lush palm groves, exploring pathways that tunnel through dense vegetation, connecting one kasbah to another. This network of greenery and historical sites forms a unique walking experience, offering picturesque views at every turn. Nearby, the Valley of Roses, including such towns as Boumalne Dadès, presents another natural spectacle, especially during the blooming season when the air is perfumed with the scent of roses. For those looking to extend their exploration, the Atlas Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop with opportunities for hiking and observing local wildlife.

Food & Drink

The cuisine in Skoura consists of locally-inspired dishes that often feature dates, almonds, and, of course, roses, which appear in both savory dishes and desserts. Visitors can enjoy tagines enriched with locally grown produce and seasoned with herbs from the oasis. Mint tea, often accompanied by pastries scented with rose water, rounds out the dining experience.
